Subject: my car modifications

IMG_1288I received a lot of emails asking me about the modifications to my car. So i finally took some time and posted this on http://www.kgb-racing.com.

Ignition:

The ignition modifications on the car start with Tii mechanical advance distributor that is timed at full advance at about 3500 RPM. Points were replaced with Pertronix Ignitor. The spark is powered by Crane 6HA ignition box and Fireball Coil powering Bosch spark plugs through 8mm wires.

Engine and Drivetrain

The engine was built and tuned by Stu at Schutz and Krum in Sacramento. The induction is done by a pair of Weber 40 DCOE carburetors. The basic IMG_1274carburetor tuning consist of 34mm venturis, 140 Main Jets and 210 Air Correctors. The fuel is supplied by a low pressure Carter fuel pump running through a Holy pressure regulator tuned to 3.5psi. The engine is built to stock spec and tuned on a Mustang dyno. The engine spins an 8lb aluminum flywheel with a lightweight clutch. This is transferred to a 4:10 ratio 50% lock up limited slip differential. All this drives 15x10 Jongbloed Racing wheels with 275/30R15 Hoosier A6 tires. Covering the wheels are a set of reproduction Group 2 Flares.

Exhaust

The exhaust consist of Ireland Engineering Header going into 2.5" stainless pipe leading into a 17" long lightweight stainless steel Burns Muffler. The exhaust system ends right behind the driver seat.

2Suspension:

The front suspension consist of shortened strut coilovers with Advanced Design custom Inserts riding on 500lb springs. The strut bar is from Ireland Engineering and clears the air box. The sway bars are also form Ireland Engineering and are 22mm hollow in front and 22mm solid in the rear. The rear shocks are also from Advanced Design and are supporting 500lb springs with height adjustable perches. Ground Control camber/caster plates set the front camber to about -3.5 degrees. The drop of the rear suspension causes the semi-trailing arm to set the wheels at about -3 degrees.

Brakes
Brakes are mostly stock. Stock front rotors and rear drums. Rear slave cylinder was replaced with a 22mm one. The same size as the one that was on 1600. This was done to move a bit more braking to the rear. To control the brakes a brake bias valve was installed. It took a couple races to play with the bias to get everything sorted. The pads are Hawk HP Plus and the IMG_1247shoes are Ferodo. The booster is from a Tii to give more clearance for the air box.

Interior:

The driver is supported by a Corbeau Seat and is held in place by Willans 6 Point Harness that is attached to standard seat belt mounting holes on the sides and to a harnesw bar in the rear. Momo steering wheel and UUC short shift kit put the controls in driver's hands.

Brakes? 320i conversion up front and 320i rear drums? Bias control device added as well. What kind of pads? Anything else we can't see?

Very nice set up Steve. Thanks for sharing trade secrets.

With the rules for FSP being relatively restrictive, what is the next area you are going to look for focus on?

The next step is a light weight racing clutch.

I am also pondering about making my own functional air dam.

Hi'ya Steve,

A Raytek and a few Q's....

I'll be at Sean Casey's this Saturday for the Tech Session etc. and will have your (Steve) Raytek w/ me if you're comming, otherwise I need your shipping addy' so I can get it to you. :)

Steve: I'm about to get a set of GC coil overs and have Ireland's 22 hollow front bar that I'll be using.... Where did you pick up the sway bar end links?

Right now I have an old set of Miller-Norburn 22/19 sways... the rear is the old sliding link style. Question is, do you think that I'll be able to adj. this rear bar stiff enough to match the Ireland front or should I go ahead and get the 22 rear bar to take out the guess work?

Tom,

I will have to miss the visit up north again. We are actually racing in San Diego this weekend. I'll email you my address.

The IE sway bar set gets you a good balance. I do think i need something a little stiffer in the front. So your combo might work out well. What do you plan on doing with the car?

I bought all the parts for the sway bar at mcmaster.com The great thing is that they overnight everything to you from the city of Commerce. And the delivery is cheap :)
