Subject: Hyundai/kia thoughts/experiences??

the hyundai elantra (in same outside size class as corolla/civic) has more interior room than even my mom's '07 Camry let alone the corolla and civic. as you know i am a big fat mofo (6'4", over 300lbs) and so interior room is the priority. it also has a 2liter 16v with vvt, 132/138 hp (depending on PZEV/ULEV status) and the same torque... the hyundai warranty eliminates any worries about reliability but im wondering about the intangibles, if you will, like feel and "sportines". I understand the Kia is supposed to be the "sporty" make from hyundai(/kia--they are same company), just wondering if anyone has driven either the elantra or spectra. i could go drive em myself but alas the keyboard is closer... ;)

just go rent one and rallycross it. :)

some of my friends did that with a Kia, and they managed to break the rear sway bar mounts. good thing the rental company didnt find out because it'd only thump over bumps.

hyundai yes, kia no. I have had several hyundai's in the shop (remember I see them on the flesh, after we take them apart and see how they do in hits). Hyundai's tend to have longevity (I have seen high mileage ones that still look and run good), I talk to the owner's and they all seem to love them. In fact I had an Infinity big sedan (q something) high miles, side by side with the Elantra, same year, same miles, guess which one ran and look better...yeap the Elantra.

Interesting input Michael! I have heard negatives about nissan(infinity) reliability before, so they are pretty much out of the picture... Going to have to go drive the others in order to make a choice. Consumer Reports has the elantra on their cover this month and they gush over it, not that CR is evaluating them beyond appliance-level. However I already have my sports car (02), need something for Indy winter (*COUGH* Rust)/cooper hauling duties, ideally with a/c... ;)

I rent cars several times a year, so I've had my share of Hyundais and Elantras.

Last year I got a Kia Rio in Charlotte for my trip to V@ the V. It felt very flimsy and, even though it had less than 3K miles, there were quite a few rattles. I had previously rented an Elantra 5 door (previous generation from the current one) and it was pretty comfy and peppy for an economy car. It also felt quite solid. The newer generation should be even better.

This year I had a base Sonata for a week in April and I was impressed on its features and of how solid it felt.

For the V @ the V weekend I got a Hyundai Azera which was great. It had all the bells and whistles, including a killer Infinity sound system with Sirius satellite radio, and had great power. My wife and I drove it for the 5+ hours from Atlanta to Winston-Salem and felt fine after all those hours on the road. The first year I went I got a PT Cruiser and I almost had to be helped to get out of it after the drive from ATL.

thanks Harry! I will have to drive the elantra, and make sure to drive one thats got some miles on it. might get a lightly used one anyway.... it has almost a full 1.5" more legroom than my mom's bigass camry, which i fit into just barely (speaking of big asses.... :p)

HMM the little tiny accent is actually pretty cute looking, reminds me of the OG Minis. only 2500lbs, 110hp, and is STILL bigger headroom/legroom wise than my mom's otherwise-gargantuan camry!

funny since i am so big but i have always loved tiny lil cars.... ;)
