Subject: 2002 to M3 swap?

Hello everyone-

New to board, looking to see if anyone has the basic cost ideas of a 2002 to M3 motor/tranny conversion? I saw one a few weeks ago and fell in love intantly, Im trying to figure out the cost and where to start. Also is there anyone in the VT/MA/CT area who can perform this and what would the total cost be if you did? Including parts needed minus the car? The car is an early model 02 restored body fair running engine.

Thanks in advance Steve

its not cheap, thats for sure. If you want more power you may just be better off working with the M10

FIRST OFF attend a car show like the Germand Car Day at Larz Anderson
Museum lawn event coming up at Brookline, MASS.
Ther you can meet and talk to the folks who have performed
the S14 motor transplant.
They will give you every detail and real dollar expense.

NO ONE pays someone to do this kind of work!
It's a do it yerself creation.

The labor cost would be outstanding - and that would be IF
you could find a shop to do it - which you wont .

Welcome to the club - find an E30 M3 for those days you want
that kind of performance - and pay attention to details
and set up your 'stock' 2002 properly for max performance,
which is fantastic for the age and time it was designed.

go to the museum link for dates of the great lawn events

Talk to Matt Mcginn at http://www.sports-car-restoration.com/
They had a white S-14 conversion at V@V that they were doing for a customer. The car was pretty baddass. They're from CT.

JP Cadoux at A1 Imports Autoworks in San Rafael did this S14 Evo conversion. It was at the Bay Area 02 Swap and Show last weekend.

Daniel Cooper's S14-powered '73tii was there, too! JP works on that one as well.

You may also consider an M20 swap if you're hungry for performance without the high-dollar S14 engine -- plenty of torque -- easy to find and build up -- 200+ hp -- huge "grin-factor". Ask davinsf. JP built one for him.

Hi,

My name is Nate and I work at sports Cars Restoration with Matt McGinn. We have done two s14 swaps into 2002 and have two more soon to be in the works as well as m50/s50 stuff. The s14 is a relatively straight forward swap but there is a bit of chassis modification to use the 265 m3 5 speed as well as some custom fabricated parts to make the install as clean and factory as possible.

If you are serious in a s14 2002 then I would definitely give Matt or one of us at the shop a call at (860) 621 2002 or just stop by and check out what we do.

get a grip CD - it's not obligatory to work on 02's yourself. He'll find plenty of places willing to do the work, which isn't exactly difficult/time consuming for a fully equipped garage and a professional mechanic. I'd have loved to have had the time and space to have done mine back in London, but without a garage and a seriously time-consuming (and well paying) job it was the car I chose for someone else to create for me. Beats buying something new.

Now go buy yourself a standard 02 and practise what your preach! (and that was all light hearted BTW - love you really).

Salut, Nick

You spend a fair bit of time on this forum but do you actually ever read anything besides what you write yourself? There have been numerous M2 conversions done by shops in the US. And the whole 'keep it stock' advice is quite annoying. If he wants to put a more modern motor which makes twice the output stock for stock AND maintains the '02s lovely weight distribution, then why discourage him?

This is what Aardvarc Racing says about doing the conversion (not sure when this was last updated):

You've had your 2002 for 5 or 10 years, or maybe even longer. You've replaced just about everything. You know your car inside and out, having made many of the repairs and modifications yourself. You love your car, but it needs a motor. You want more power, but don't want to screw around with smog laws. The new M3 is sweet, but $40k is a ton of money, and insurance will bust you. What are you going to do with your baby?

AARDVARC RACING has the solution. Install an E30 M3 motor in your 2002. Your car will be faster than an E30 M3 and equally as fast as an E36 M3, for a fraction of the cost.

So why install an E30 M3 motor in a 2002?

Performance
200+ Horsepower (5.0 Mustang killer). Smog-legal. Will comply with current and future smog laws (less time and $ over the long haul). Can be modified to produce over 250 hp. Street-able performance. Smooth idle. Starts easily every morning. Simple and powerful. Why play with turbos, superchargers, or twin side draft/radical cam shaft performance options.? Weight. Will add less than 100 pounds to the weight of a 2002 (about 10 HP per 100 lbs!) Fast!

Reliability
M3 motor is nearly bullet-proof. Many E30 M3s on the road have over 150,000 miles and are still making very good power and remain good daily drivers (and occasional track cars). The Motronics ignition system is relatively simple and keeps the motor running smoothly all the times. Just change the oil and spark plugs, and adjust the valves every 40k miles.

Cost
Approximately the same cost as building a high output 2002 motor. The total cost of completing the M3 installation in a 2002 will range from approximately $6,000 to $10,000, depending on who performs the labor, the cost and completeness of the used M3 motor purchased, and the cost of the conversion parts and supplies.

Ease of Installation The M2 conversion kit is designed for the individual who is has a good mechanical background, and who likes to and succeeds in making repairs to Bimmers. Nothing fancy, but if you can repair brakes, change shocks and springs, wire stereos, replace a clutch, or change a differential, then the M2 conversion is something you can probably handle.

The conversion requires standard tools, and no welding or parts fabrication is necessary. The kit is designed for the shade-tree mechanic, so it is easy to understand, without too much technical information.

INTRODUCING THE AARDVARC RACING M2 CONVERSION KIT

AARDVARC Racing is pleased to announce its M2 conversion kit. The kit is unlike other conversion kits because it provides a modular system which appeals to both the shade-tree and the professional BMW mechanic. It is a flexible system which can be used by the aspiring M2 driver to reduce total conversion costs by providing various kit options, depending upon the mechanical aptitude of the installer, the facilities and time available, and the condition of the pre-conversion 2002.

For more information on the M2 Kit, contact aardvarc@2002parts.com

Hi Steve O

If you are not handy with tools and have limited engineering and mechanical skills, I would suggest leaving the shop to any shop that has done a couple of similar swaps. There are more than one way to do the job. If youreon the East Coast, I would entrust Matt and his posse at SCR to do the job. If you are on the West "Pot smoking" Coast, then give A1 a call.

I am myself in the midst of such swap and the possibilities are endless. I am gong with Megasquirt and DTM airbox. No need to use the three flywheel sensors and weld the S14 tranny bung onto the e21 tranny. I am using an e21 alloy rad, so no overflow tank. Etc.

I have an e30 M3 and loooove that motor. I can't imgaine what it can do in a car with 1/3 less weight.

loaded 2.5 evo blocks are still avail and im contemplating buying one. crank rod and pistons plus you get the added bonus of the evo webbing and squirters. they arent as expensive as you might think either.
