Subject: Oh no. Not another M2 project.

Damn. I am not good at making blogs. And am pretty short in terms of time for properly documenting such project. But basically here's where I am going to for my 2002 racecar.

S14 motor
DTM airbox
Megasquirt V3 with Alpha-N
5 speed OD
Alpina style racing pedal box

The S14 motor.

It came from a wrecked M3 which was "straightened" then an abandoned project for 7 years. The front of the motor doesn't seem to have ben hit, but the AC compressor bracket is broken. Also, maybe it is from the accident, maybe not, but there is an air connector between both TBs, and it is slightly cracked. I need to find another one.

Ideally, I wanted to simply degunk the motor and install it. But there was so much gunk that I got suspicious. The motor had major oil leaks from the lower front cover, and tons of black silicone wqs used to cover the source of the leak. Also, it looks like the motor was rebuilt at some time (cluster shows 100K miles though) as a lot of orange silicone was used EVERY FUCKING WHERE. My plan is to take the engine apart and reinstall new gaskets where needed, and proper ornage and blue sealant where required. I popped the cam cover and everything looked new. No gunk in there. Probably the accident happened not long after the accident. Thw sparplugs were also brand new, not even torqued.

Fo the oil pan. I already have cut up an S14 spare and it is ready at the machine shop for welding, with an increased 1 quart extension.

Tranny. As I will be using MS3, no need to transfer the sesnor from the S14 bellhousing onto the e21 tranny.

I have designed a 36-1 trigger wheel and ma trying not to cut pr grind the TDC pin on the front cover. I will use EDIS so no need for a front distributor. I will block the hole with Massive's exhaust cam block-off plate.

The engine itself will be stripped to a minimum. So, obviously no AC, no power steering pump, but also no oil vapor recirculator, and a few coolant hoses less as I am using an e21 radiator. So, I am blocking the tiny coolant tube near intake #1.

Hi Lee. Wouldnt that put you in another race braket, i mean, you will not be allowed anymore into the vintage ? didnt you removed the SDS for that reason ?

Hope it will go well.

I am looking forward to seeing the updates. I love my S-14 conversion and have probably put about 5,000 miles on it since the conversion.

Fyi, the brakes are just amazing. Thanks!!

So, here's an update. The engine has been taken apart and cleaned. Parts ordered from Blunt and will reassemble it properly in two weeks. In the meanwhile, I have beadblasted and painted/anodized/plated what needed cosmetic improvement. DTM fiberglass airbox is ordered from JedM3 (John Dunnock).

Engine will run either EDIS or simple M42 coils. But for better performance and less stress for the Megasquirt, I may go with EDIS. In any case, the 36-1 and sensor brackets have been cut. 20 units of each. I designed the sensor bracket so that you align the TDC mark on the pulley with one teeth ahead of missing tooth, while the sensor is aligned with tooth #9. Sensor still reads 90˚ after missing tooth, and it makes the install more universal.

I will not cut the injection harness at all, except for removing the evaporative surge valve wiring and relay. The interface between the 2002 and the S14 harness will all happen at the C101 connector. I had a spare male connector (chassis side) and will make new pins for the chassis contacts. Shall be very simple and clean.

So far, here's how it goes. Hopefully I am not wrong, but will spend more time confirming this info(did that during the night).

In bold: connections needed

01 - To alternator dash light - Cluster
02 - OBC - Oil static. Not needed.
03 - No pin
04 - To coolant temp gauge - Cluster
05 - To oil pressure light - Cluster
06 - From fuse. Evaporative purge valve relay. Not needed.
07 - To ignition switch - RUN position
08 - To Gauge. Fuel economy. Not needed.
09 - To Tachometer - Cluster
10 - OBC - Oil dynamic. Not needed.
11 - Service interval module in cluster
12 - No pin
13 - To 7.5A fuse - To Fuel pumps
14 - No pin
15 - To ignition switch - START position
16 - Not used - SRS connector.
17 - No pin
18 - To ignition switch - START position
19 - To oil temp gauge - Cluster
20 - No pin

Sounds nice, Lee. You mentioned you had 20 sets of 36-1 wheels and sensor brackets made up. I'd be interested in a set if they are not all spoken for. I'm still assembling parts, but plan to run Megasquirt with EDIS.

One alternative to the diagnostic plug is to use the ecu connector. I'm planning to build my Megasquirt and connect through the the stock ecu connecter. Should be able to use all factory M3 wiring, except for the EDIS wires.

Why are you even bothering with the following in a racecar? Dont you have aftermarket, more accurate gauges for these?
04 - To coolant temp gauge - Cluster
05 - To oil pressure light - Cluster
19 - To oil temp gauge - Cluster

Is this necessary to hook up?
01 - To alternator dash light - Cluster

Ian. I will also have the Megasquirt PCB put into a Bosch box, using stock Bosch DME connector. I will have trigger wheels for sale, around $25. Trigger mounting brackets too. Idle will be handled by Glen's Garage board.

MadJurgen. I will be using the BMW Bosch senders, but with aftermarket gauges. Also, the charging light in the cluster is necessary as if I leave the bluewire unconnected, the battery will not charge. The diode that goes with the charge light is required.

Wasn't sure if I would go EDIS or just twin coils. A friend of mine who's knowledgeable with MS persuaded me that EDIS would be the way to go.

Therefore I bought a used set-up off eBay for $100.

The injection harness is now clean from any unncessary wiring, and all pin locationss on C101 have been confirmed, using a multimeter. When I receive the MS module, I will see if anymore wiring needs to be removed, or altered.

The VR sensor bracket and trigger wheel are in production. Due for mid August. Positionning the VR sensor bracket on the two 8mm water pump bolts is most likely the easiest way, but it does have drawbacks. If changing the waterpump, then the sensor must be regapped. BTW the bracket is designed for the 1994 Ford Escort sensor as pictured above. Caravan, and Intrepid sensors are different.

Hi Lee

sounds like a good project that you have on you hands

can you tell me if you have any block off plats for the exhaust cam as this is also what i wont to do . and will you be doing any more of the sensor brackets

Thanks Harry

Been a couple of month since nothing moved on the project. Been too busy. Sorry. Anyway, here are two pictures of the modified lower oil pan.

I don't remember who did it originally, but thanks for the idea. It looks like it will allow to use the S14 oil pan with the 2002 subframe.

Also, for HarryM2, block-off plates and trigger wheels/sensor brackets are still available.
