yep that is a rear AC unit never seen one on a BMW though. I have restored a couple of 60's Lincolns with trunk mounted air, it was primarily a limo option but made its way into a few sedans. Pain in the ass to keep functioning properly you end up with like 40 feet of lines, big fun to track down leaks. But when they work they are great at freezing the necks of the rear seat passengers..

I SAW A LATE 1950's CADILLAC THAT HAD A TRUNK MOUNTED AIR
CONDITIONER .
IT HAS TWO CLEAR PLASTIC TRUMPETS MOUNTED ON THE REAR DECK
TO DIRECT THE COLD AIR UP TOWARDS THE ROOF .
APPARENTLY THIS WAS TO PREVENT COLD NECK SYNDROME WITHOUT
OBSTRUCTING THE VIEW OF THE DRIVER . _________________
