Subject: 40/40 Weber with 008 distributor

Does anybody know if the 008 is a good match for the 40/40 carb. I had it with my 45DCOE's and didnt know if it had the right advance for this app. I have a Korman worked head with a mild cam and 9.3 pistons with a Tii exhaust manifold. It seemed to have a big flat spot. I am just getting back into my 76 2002 that I have owned since new. I have had it in storage for about 14 years now and want to get it back in shape. I am enthused reading about all the folks here in this community and I have been meaning to tear into my baby and make it new again with some enhancements. It needs a gas tank and new fenders and various rust repairs but is in otherwise decent shape. I originally took it to its first CCA Oktoberfest in 1982 and its first drivers school with the NJ chapter in 1978. Needless to say I have fond memories of time spent in this car. Looking forward to posting some pics. Thanks

A flat spot is most likely to be a carb tuning problem rather than an ignition timing problem. With all due respect to everyone on the board, distributor setup is a bit of a black art. The odds of anyone having a 40/40 carb (pretty darn rare) and an 008 dizzy are remote at best. Then, couple that with the qualification that someone will know the answer to your question, the probability = zilch. Call Jack Fahuna if you want expertise on distributor setup.

I had a 40/40 DFAV carb for a few years on a bone stock, tired oil belching/burning motor...and STILL....I flat out LOVED it - though there was an odd whistle at part throttle I never eliminated. The toothed "gear" bellcranks on the thing were ultra cool! (but I'm a nerd about that stuff).

My advice - set the ignition timing as far advanced as the motor will allow without pinging. If you don't have the ear for it, consult a seasoned veteran of BigDog timing method - but have a timing light on hand so you can document your trial and error results.

Metric Mechanic once sold these carbs, and might be able to offer jetting info/advice.

My WAG is that you'll have a hard time getting a good idle
AND max power. The 008 really doesn't retard the spark all that much
at 4000, so by extension, it doesn't let it advance enough as you slow down.

My experience with a 38/38 (significantly different carb, I know...)
was that the vacuum circuit dizzy (early one) helped a lot in getting 'round town,
idle and
cruise timing pretty good, and still didn't ping at WOT at the track...

Just a guess,

Paul,

You are right on. I got it at metric mechanic along with one of there "ultimate Swaybars". I guess I should consult with them to see if I thought maybe one of the vacuum advance distributors might be a better match for this setup. The sidedrafts had no throttled vacuum port, hence the full centrifufal 008 used for those. I thought that there was more advance to be had with the vacuum advance types, maybe helping my problem.
