How could one determine a c/r box from the norm?

they were painted brownish red

part # 32.11.2.670.002 = left hand steering box ratio 15,5:1
standard for all cars

part # 32.11.2.670.005 = left hand steering opt. Sport box
painted red)ratio 12,8:1
Sonderausstattung (special edition)

Sport Steering Gear Box not available for Right Hand Drive models

standard steering box ratio = 15.5:1
STEERING WHEEL TURNS (LOCK TO LOCK ) = 3.5 TURNS
part number for right-hand drive = 32.11.1.108.648
part number for left-hand drive = 32.11.2.670.002

optional 'Sport' steering box ratio = 12.8:1 = fewer (3 ) turns
lock-to-lock than Std.
part number for left-hand drive only = 32.11.2.670.005
number on tag on top of box should be " 7316.955.177 "

Sport Steering Gear not for street - requires higher effort turning
when parking, and not with use of small Dia. steering wheels
It's intended for Sport events where less steering input is needed

ALL STERING GEARS ARE MFG. BY ZF

..AND TOP YOURS UP WITH "SAE 90 HYPOID GEAR OIL" ONLY

and it's NOT a C/R steering box

it has only ONE RATIO - it's does not have many gear ratios
that are spaced closer to each other - like a 4/5 speed transmission

BMW refers to it as a "SPORT" STEERING GEARBOX = one ratio inside

you could call it a 'quick' ratio gear box

My 74 is equipped with one and it's no fun when it comes to parking. My wife tried to take the car out of the garage one day and was unable to turn the wheel.....not such a bad thing depending on how you look at it!!

Thanks for the info, C.D.!
