..foam? Does one not trap water or something? Density? I've seen references to both, but am unsure why they are not interchangable.

probably the 2 major differences....closed cel last much much longer as well

Closed cell foam doesn't have the capillary action that open cell does. Open cell acts more like a sponge. In dry environments it is fine, but if there's a chance of significant moisture, use the more expensive closed cell.
