Subject: Alpina System

I saw one a while back on Ebay it sold for loads. What do you think an Alpina Throttle system is worth (it's complete & was fitted to my old Tii), it comes with trumpets & linkages too. Very rare.

about 200 quid Richard. so if you can send it to me I will get shot of it for you.

on ebay it should get between 1000-2000 I would of thought.

yes, incredibly pedestrian....I will take it off your hands so your garage is not so cluttered.....

I do believe that is worth more than my car. An alpina clase ratio steering box recently sold above 1000 so that beatuitful setup should be around 2000. I'm sure the more experienced members will give you a better approximation.

I have to take this opportunity to ask, how did this setup affect power and throttle response? Why is it no longer on your car? There are not many people around who can give a first hand account of this system. any info would be very appreciated by the forum members here.

Thanks for the photos,

Chris

That is British Pounds, not dollars...right?

I am assuming that is an A4 system, I have never seen one like that, it is ultra clean and probably ultra rare. To give you an idea, about 5 years ago, I paid $1500 Euros plus shipping for mine, and everybody agreed I had gotten a super deal (especially because the dollar was worth something back then), and it was not as clean as yours. I would say, if anybody really loves to have one, they are just going to belly up to the bar, at least $3000, if not more...

Hey Dubois,

What did you (do you) think of the setup? How did it change things? chris

I agree. If it is complete, with Alpina specific pump, airbox, linkage, four throttle specific fuel lines, etc., it could even be around $4k. Hell, my Alpina specific K-fish pump new was over $2k ..... in 1987.

I am about sure around $4k for that setup but depends on what the seller wants for it. I would go with $4k it is a really nice vintage setup... It is so pure I want it but
No tengo dinero!!!

It's no longer on my old Tii as the original system has now been installed by the new owner, who wanted originality. When I had the car it run fine but a bit lean. It uses the standard Tii pump & does not come with one. I shall take some photos & properly list it on Ebay. It does come with trumpets & socks.

First I bolted up to my stock engine and stock pump (264 cam) and it seemed that it added a bunch of low and mid range torque. Then I rebuilt the engine, 292 cam but kept the 9.5 CR. Lost the low end, but gained some back with the Supersprint 4-2-1. Right now the top end is really good, and pulls nicely even with the 5th OD. It is my daily driver and I didn't want to do something radical. I can still drive it in town and it won't stall even at low revs. The top end is definitely improved over stock, it seems that the car is no longer gasping for air and it wants to go. Problem is that you would have to be a bit insane to go 125mph. Right now, I am at a stage that I would love to have tons of low end instead... a 2002d????

It definately changed my car. However the car is most likely not in perfect tune (haven't tuned it in 3 years after moving cross US) and so this may also a factor. However, with 10:1 forged pistons, modest cam (284?) the car is less "snappy" at low RPMs with the A4 throttle and Alpina pump than with the Tii plenum.

That being said, it seems to breath better at higher RPMs now (as you would think it should).

I guess it's hard to nail down exactly b/c for it to be very accurate I would have to feel that it's in perfect tune - which it isn't (although it does behave nicely). I know I can coax more out of it if I spend some time with A/F ratio.

My 2 cents!

Jason

My opinion. If you can afford to, keep it! Don't sell it. Just put it away in a box. You'll regret it in 15 years when you want to build that vintage racer and kick yourself for selling an ultra-rare part back in 2008 for a measely $4k. If it were only a nice setup that's one thing, but this is also a peice of history. By all means use it. I'm not saying it should go behind glass, but if you can't/don't want to use it now, save it for when you can.
