Subject: door panel "chrome" strip Q?

Maybe asked before, but here goes...The door panel mylar covered strips; are they somehow heat-set on to the vinyl, or glued in some way? I just noticed, on a set that I have, that altho the mylar is "tired" when viewed from above, they look perfect when viewed from the under side;...so, if I could surgically remove and flip from left side to right side, they'll look as-new. Not a great idea for the Del Monte lodge, but fine until I'm gone, me-thinks. Ideas? Dave V. in NC

re-glue 'em...methinks you'd never get 'em to adhere properly again...and anyway, the mylar on the underside will start to peel pretty quickly.

This problem has been discussed on the forum for years, and no one has come up with a realsly good solution yet (check archives). Mylar tape works well on the straight sections, but is nearly impossible to make lay flat on the curved sections.

Adhesive backed aluminum sheet (as used for model airplane construction) has the same problem, and isn't as shiny as the Mylar.

Paint doesn't stick and doesn't look very good either.

Most of us have just learned to live with it, while the experimentation continues...

As you say the experimentation goes on...I've read a lot of the ideas/posts/archives, but I didn't remember anyone trying to surgically remove/replace. These had mostly faded, and not really peeled, so I thought....Oh well...I've even considered having a friend fab some half-round billet aluminum, but I think its too heavy for the vinyl, and adherence is still an issue. And finishing. The trim on e3/e9's is another option, but if you find some worth a toot, there is usually an e9 that desparately needs it worse than an 02. Still thinking and looking...Dave V. in NC

Subject: I disagree there is not a good altenative

I recovered the panels in P1 and in the touring.

Again, I have discussed this many times about removing, cleaning and applying.

The film Prism Graphics, Seattle, WA, is the only film thin enough to stick to the curved sections.

The discoloration on the left is a reflection

I agree with Bill. I used some chrome mylar from a hobby store and the strips came out awesome! It is time consuming and you will need to get the strips completely clean prior to installing the new mylar, but the results are worth it.

I did the doors, and the other day I noticed that the back side panels are pealing, so I guess I have to do the same as the doors.

If you call Prism, Brad, the fellow who owns that store, has done several sets of panels for folks, he may give you some tips or stories.

damn bill that looks really nice. one of the P.O.'s of my car tried to do this but it's bubbling & peeling off and looks like shit. i'm going to try and re-do it myself. did you use an X-ACTO knife to trim around the edges? how are the strips attached to the door panel, are they removable for applying the chrome mylar film, or are they permanently attached?
