I always have to route through back posts to see if any new postings have been made to the project blogs. The site should automatically place any topics that receive new posts to the front so we can stay on top of new news.

Yeah -- you click on your name, select profile and set
Topic Sorting (Thread "Bumping"): ON
that'll get the threads with the newest posts to the top of the list.
I assume you figured that out but just to be sure
