Subject: M20 Motor Mounts

Okay - So, I've read through every post on the Williams mounts. I've spent every night this last week after work and several hours this weekend trying to get the motor mounted with the 323i trans attached.

Before dropping in the motor, I had to modify two of the drivers side holes by enlarging them a bit in order to attach the plate to the motor. Upon lowering the motor and trans into the bay, the driver's side fits pretty well, but the passenger side seems to be way off. I can get the front bolt into the subframe on the passenger side but this then pushes the mount up on the driver's side. Furthermore, as I try to move the engine to the driver's to get the rear bolt on the passenger mount to line up the trans hits the drivers side tunnel. This is not just the slave cylinder (that has been hammered out plenty) but the rear of the trans.

Am I missing something here? I'm no brain surgeon but the trans should definitely be centered in the tunnel and as of now it's not...

Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Rear bolt is on the left - still about 1/2" away

Driver's side mount - sitting too high when passenger side front bolt is attached

Transmission is hitting the drivers side

Did you buy these from Dan recently? I have a set from the first run made in 2001 I think... as far as I know, they are on their 3rd or 4th revision by now. Anyways, my passenger side mount was pretty much the same as yours, at the time I did not have a welder or any real tools, so I just made a mount plate that bolted to the subframe, and then dan's mount bolted to the plate with at least a 1/2" or 3/4" offset to make it fit.

In any event, I would have to guess that over half of the m20 guys using Dan's mounts have had to modify them in some way. Not trying to knock the mounts...that just seems to be the norm..

I suggest you raise the engine with a floorjack, then slacken the motor mount brackets from the block. Try to fit the bolts on the subframe for the square mount, and lower the round one. Tighten. Lower the engine and tighten the bolts on the block.

Matt -

Thanks for the response. Yes, these are the Williams mounts - I just purchased a couple months ago and I have read that others have had a few issues with them. Good idea about the mounting plate, you happen to have any pictures? Any issues with regards to stress on the subframe while using the mounting plate?

Thanks for your time!
Chris

Lee -

Thanks for the response as well... I've tried raising the motor to get the bolts on the passenger side to line up as you suggested - I have both a floor jack and a hoist that I've been using. But there is no way that the rear bolt will fit with the tranny in alignment and the driver's side mount will not "settle" to the bottom of the frame mount. Still stumped, although I might try Matt's suggestion.

Thanks,
Chris

I'll see if I can find some pics today; if not then I'll be at my shop Tuesday night and can take some. I don't think there is much stress on the plate how it sits...its been a few years and seen a few track days with no ill effects.. One of these days I'll redo that mount or even just weld the plate to the existing mount.
