I'll need your number as soon as you land. You can be our Euro parts source. Bring coveralls so you can cruise the wrecking yards. I've already prepared a page of parts I'd like you to send over.
BTW, congrats and have a great time. I'm really excited for you.
Thanks- Cris
Oh and you did't have to do that. My wife, son and I really appreciate it. _________________ The rides!

..... Michael Cahsel at http://www.bmw02.de has got the GRP doors I want. :) They're in Bad Oeynhausen in case you need a '02 fix while you're there.
Something tells me that you're going to get really familiar with the Deutschepost. http://www.deutschepost.de/ :)
We'll talk.

Go to Dachau if you're in to history. Definitely go to Murphy's Law irish pub in the downtown area! I was stationed there back in the mid '90's. Have fun with it!
I've actually been to Dachau and what a sobbering experience that was. Especially since it was a cold and foggy day. I hope to break the scale of having fun while I'm there.

I'll for sure be hitting the wrecking yards if I can find them. The last time I went parts hunting in Germany it was really difficult to find anything that was close to a pick n pull. But don't worry I'll be on the look out! Cris, I totally appreciate the help and that was a small thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Tom - I actually met Michael Cahsel in 02 when I was there for the Bavaria Tour 02. I still have his card somewhere. Not sure if he speaks English now, but back then he didn't. Just means I need to learn deutch! Those doors are pretty trick and apparently super light eh.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!
You got the job.
We're already planning our European Vacation, so get yer butt over there and get things ready for us. And as norm said, "None of that Nutella crap for breakfast."
When are you leaving?
Storage situation for the cars?
It's a tii remember, it NEEDS to be driven.
Thanks Steve. I got the job. Ummmm.. excuse me, Nutella will be the main stay of my breakfast food selection when you come to visit! Slated to leave Mid to Late August. I can't store ANY of the vehicles I own at my parents house so I'm kinda scrambling to find storage. The tii is up for sale kind of now, but I'll put an offical posting soon. I like Cris's idea... maybe for Tanner!
At the 02 fest in Eureka Springs, Andy S and I were discussing our time in Europe. While travelling around I found this shot with the camera. Remember, the year is 1971. Andy has one also, if he'll post it. he he
That photo is great. I dig those old German license plates. The oval ones were way cool too. _________________ Evan Chong

I relocated to a village outside of Frankfurt area ten years ago and lived there 2.5 years. You picked a much nicer area but my company only had one German office at the time. In a lot of ways, I prefer to live in Germany, but ultimately I decided to return to the US.
One of the biggest hurdles for an expat is the bureaucracy it takes to acquire and maintain a work permit. They issue the permits in slowly increasing increments, something like 30-days, 90-days, 180-days and annually. Each time they are about to expire, in a specific window of time, you need to take off of work, stand in line at your hometown govt office, and reapply for the next one (or pay somebody to stand in line for you).
Yes, there is more tax in Germany. Taxes are complex too...with US and German entities vying to double dip your income, especially in the transition years. When you register residency in your hometown, if you claim a religious affiliation, the govt automatically withholds a religion income tax for the church, so now is a good time to become an atheist. Then there’s the TV tax. If you don’t claim a TV, be discrete as they do come to your home looking for evidence of TV use.
Your US drivers license is good for something like 2-years, then it is worthless. Getting a German drivers license is expensive and time consuming. Regardless of your age or experience, you have to log in X hours of instruction from a state certified instructor (paying their hourly fees) and then pass a road test conducted by the same instructor. Just hope your instructor’s rent isn’t due when it is time to take the road test.
On the plus side, well I’m sure you know much of the pluses already: Culture, logical driving conventions, Euro-spec Nutella, zoning regs that people actually follow, flying without being violated by TSA turds, generally hotter women, cheaper cell phones, cheaper/superior wine, etc. Have fun, man. _________________ 67 Caribe 1600

These are all good things to know. I totally appreciate the insight. I didn't know that about the US Driver's License after two years. Not that I'm going to be there for longer than that, but still. I'm definitely looking forward to the driving, although I won't have my 02 or WRX so maybe not so much. Did you have an 02 over there? What I would like to do is find an 02 to drive around while I'm there. I asked my Uk friends how much they are running out there and it's not too bad. I'd have to be there for a couple of years to make worth my while though. Teachers don't exactly get paid a high salary.
I'll be sure to not claim any affiliation with a church to avoid the 150Euro a month tax, TV one too. How much was the TV one when you were there? I had to pay the TV tax when I lived in Japan, but it wasn't too bad.
Thanks for the advice.

| RandyMolson wrote: | Evan,
Yeah, I was more opposed to the tv tax over the principal of it than the amount. It probably isn't much. Taxing people for tuning in a signal from the air...I just can't get over that concept.
I had an e36 when I lived there...that was before I got into 02s. I was told that German law results in significant increases in insurance premiums once a car turns 10-years old...so much that most cars that turn 10 are quickly dispatched to eastern Europe. I was told that when I was trying to sell my 9.5 year old e36 and the market price was a fraction of what I paid a few years prior.
Come to think of it, I saw very few older cars when I was there. Maybe the car collectors have a loophole around the insurance law such as a classic car registration. It might be worth an inquiry to a German 02 site, because it would be a kick to pick up at TI! |
So it sounds like Germany and Japan are the same when it comes to old cars. The "old" Japanese cars are sent off all over South East Asia and the Middle East. That's good to know about the value. There are a couple of guys that I still am in contact with that are a part of the Deutchland 02 club, so maybe they can give me so more details on the process.
I agree that the concept of paying money for the air waves is crazy. I remember when I was staying with a friend in London and the TV Police came round lookin for an active TV. So funny. Well not really for her because it would have been a big fine.
Hopefully they haven't started any new taxes that they'll spring on me when I get there. I'll just claim no affiliation with anything!
I'll have a beer and some beer for you.

in 1975 or so, when i was about 13, i trashpicked this mug with another from a dumpster in ventura, ca. found with it were a pair of USN shoulder boards in rank of full lieutenant and some other naval paraphenalia.
this mug has partied with me since before i was legal. a treasured keepsake of the red ox, and i've never been there!

If I happen to make it up to Heidelberg I see if it still exists and get a mug. _________________ Evan Chong
