Subject: I hate transmissions

Everytime that I try to stab a transmission into a motor, I think to myself, "I really never want to do this again."

Any tips? I just can't get the shaft to line up with the pilot bearing/clutch splines.

we need an faq.

1.Get a lift of some kind, transmission, ATV, etc

2. Use a good clutch alignment tool an old steel spline is the best

3. Put the transmission in gear so you can rotate it

4. Nose the front part of the motor up to allow better positioning

5. Use two slotted studs at the top of the bell housing to hold and align the transmission, make them slotted so you can remove them.

6. As a last resort, use longer bolts to "pull everything together" if it is really stubborn, just do not force the bolts to pull. Slight pressure only.

This is why I really like to put the motor and transmission together befor e it goes in the car and do it from the bottom while on the sub-frame. Even mating the transmission and motor on the ground is a challenge.

It will go on, I have worked two hours doing the same thing over and over until something just decided to align.

Never heard of this one.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. I think that this is the most bloody-knuckled and frustrating thing that you can do in this car!

Here's my secret - might not work on everyone, but it worked for me:

1) Find someone who has a 1995 Nissan 4wd pickup with a 5 speed manual.
2) Ask them if you can replace their clutch assembly for them.
3) Do the '02 transmission job the following weekend.

You'll be like, "see, why can't everyone make their transmissions this light and easy to install?"

Subject: One more tip. . . if things are not going at all well,

pull the center link. It will allow you to tip the front of the engine higher and give you more clearance to push the new tranny in. This is particularly useful if you're trying to shoehorn a 5-speed tranny in there.

My last resort is to pull the entire engine. Bolt the tranny to the engine and drop the entire thing in place. This is actually the easiest way to do things, but you will need to pull that center link.

This is absolutely my least favorite job on a 2002.

John N

I like to remove the spark plugs and rotate the motor some while I'm using the Bill Williams trick. Usually, you'll hear a thud and the trans will slip right on.
