Subject: Back from the dead

Howdy, all. Been quite a while since I posted regularly here. The last couple years were pretty light on the 02 front - busy with other things, spending money on other things, and just a general waning in my enthusiasm for a car that I've owned for the last 13 years. I doubt I put much more than 100 miles on my car last year.

Thankfully, my interest in my 02 seems to be returning this spring, thanks in no small part I believe due to my return to the BMW daily driver fold with my acquisition last fall of a 2001 525i. I got the 02 out last month, drove it once, and proceeded to rip it apart in the interest of doing some upgrades. There were three main projects: modify and install the 2000ti aircan that I bought a few years ago, install the 80A alternator from my now-deceased E28, and remove the mechanical fan and replace it with the electric fan pulled from the aforementioned E28. I also wanted to throw in the Blaupunkt CD player the I had in the E28. I completed these this morning, and took the car out for its first real run of the year.

It felt a bit skittish (I'm still tweaking pressures in the new Kumhos, which also seem to have very soft sidewalls compared to my old Pirellis), but everything worked like it was supposed to, and nothing fell off. The ti airbox changes the sound of the intake considerably, and the Webers are happier with the airhorns installed. The charging system is putting out a strong 14v, even with lots of lights and accessories running. The electric fan works wonderfully, with both a temperature switch in the radiator and a manual override in the center console.

Power feels a little stronger than I remember, which is a nice bonus, but even better is that having the valve cover vent hooked up to a proper intake vacuum has basically eliminated the oil smoke I would get in high vacuum (engine braking) conditions.

I've still got rust in the rockers to tackle, and I've got some bumpers from a 73 coming that will get rid of the picnic tables at either end. I'm sure there are numerous other projects waiting to rear their ugly heads, but right now the car is going to be driven. Hopefully that will keep me interested.

Forgive the rambling.

They're 15x7 AREs off of an 80s Scirocco. They need .25" spacers, but other than that they're a perfect fit.

Hey Paul! Long time no see. Vintage is always a good time, though I haven't been able to attend in a couple years. Let's hope this year works out better. Keep me posted on your plans.

Yeah I just installed a Ti air can too and was surprised at the increase in low end torque over the long stacks and sock arrangement I was running

I always hated the socks, so I used the foam type (Ram-flo, I think) with no stacks. Far from ideal, but the best of a lot of bad options IMHO. The ti aircan was a pain to modify - I had to chop up the bottom, weld in some metal to make it concave to fit over the booster and under my strut brace, cut the stacks to turn them downward to point at the carbs, and weld in nuts to allow me to bolt the filters on without the end caps. Then I had to build a bracket to mount the bloody thing and figure out what to use to connect the airbox to the stacks (2.5" rubber plumbing couplers, cut down to fit). Very time-consuming, though I'm happy with the result. I'm sure I lost a considerable amount of internal volume, but I don't think I messed up the flow characteristics too much (nothing's blocked) and it's a damn sight better than the foam filters.

My 2.3 was strangled by my ti set-up...though I admittedly had the back half capped off to accomodate my battery terminal on the firewall. When I move the battery terminal someday - I'll open up the other end of the air box and see what happens.

I installed Pipercross socks - and the flow / performance improvement was DRAMATIC. I try not to think about the dust that gets through them and grinds down my valve seats, though! LONG angled stacks currently installed. With the stroker - low end is no problem...*giggle fast*.

It looks good, My car is a Tii so I already had the brackets in place but I had to make the adapters to fit the boots to the carb. Alpina made a bracket to hang the air can on non Ti-Tii cars that was attached to the 3 bolts for the strut bearing I have one around here somewhere but I can't find it right now.

Paul, I'd imagine you'd have problems even on a reasonably stock motor with half the intake capped. Each end only has about a 2.5" hole, so with half closed off you'd be trying to breathe through a single 2.5" opening. No wonder you saw huge improvements with the socks.

I'm considering a few things down the line, including installing the front cap with a modified 2.5" snorkel that picks up air directly behind the grill, and drilling some small holes around the perimeter of each large intake hole to allow for some additional flow. I toyed with adapting the filter box from my 533i, but it was too much additional work for probably little benefit.

Marty, the bracket I made up attaches to the strut tower brace mount, but had it not been there the strut studs would have been the other option. I thought about welding in pieces to attach the factory brackets to, but there was too much involved, and I'm obviously not particularly concerned about keeping it factory correct.

Andrej, where are you in NY? i'm in westchester, near the city. You close? drop me a line if you are @ohlm79@aol.com.

Paul, vintage fest is great! I go every year, and it seems my 02 is the only one there. Bring it some company!

Hey CD! Good to see you still around here - and still without an 02, eh?

Funny you posted those pics - I was just up in Litchfield last week, and sat down at that same restaurant where we ate on that drive. Got to see about arranging another tour - I'm sure one of your bikes would fit right in.
