Cool. Did you have to do any tunnel mods, other than the backet? Also, let us know your success with the electric speedometer. I know a lot of people shy away from installing certain transmissions because of the mechanical vs. electronic speedometer issue.

The trans is just a getrag 240, so the same as the 5 speed swap for tunnel mods. I had to cut a little hole at the top to get it higher up in the tunnel. The electric speedo was no issue at all. I have a magnet on the driveshaft and a vdo speedo. I will post some pictures when i get some open time.

Cool work on this. I'm very interested in doing a 42/44 conversion. Is there a reason to do a 44 vs a 42? For average driving, what do you think you are getting for mileage on this rig? I would like to have a cleaner burning more economical milage car with about the same motor weight up front so the handling is about the same as the M10. I wold be interested if you get the motor mounts together. Thanks. I'd like to see the photos Andy requested also.

I will see what I can do about some pictures this weekend (will be skipping v@v to just relax around the house).

I am not sure on milage just yet. I have a e30 318is with a m42 and it gets around 30.... So I would guess the 02 is higher than that. But normally when I drive the 02 I push it fairly hard.

I am not sure if I like the exhuast yet...it is pretty loud when I really get on it.

The m44 and m42 are very similar. You need to use the e30 oil pan and pick up with the 02(at least the way i did it you do).

The m44 is actually a 1.9L engine and it has knock sensors in the later engine. The m44 also has a serpintine belt rather than 3 V belts (or 1 in my case).

They also run a different intake manifold...

The early m42s had a problem with the profile gasket but by now all should be fixed. The m44 did not have that trouble.

Power wise I wouldn't think there is a big difference between the two engines. I would say if you want to run the DA SC then you want to use the m44 becasue is has knock sensors and DA made their kit for that engine.
