Thread Topic: Early '02 Side mirrors Threaded

Subject: Early '02 Side mirrors

I have an early '02 ( VIN 1661387), and I am getting ready to have it painted. The previous owner had installed Vitaloni mirrors and drilled some extra holes in the drivers door. I would like to make the car look somewhat original so I was wondering if the early '02's had passenger side mirrors? Also, does anyone have pictures or dimensions of where the mirrors were originally mounted, I have 3 sets of holes to chose from.

David,
You can buy the trap mirrors brand new available for the passenger side. As far as the dimensions, here is the diagram I obtained from CD here on the FAQ.

The mirror will have the mounting bracket and gasket short of the cage nuts that mount the bracket to the door so you need to get them separately.
If you do a search on this forum you can find more pointers. It needs to be done properly so the mirror doesn't shake or fall off.

I had mine done at the body shop as I was afraid to crack the paint while drilling holes.

Good luck

Your '68 model probably came with the real early type mirrors (see pic). These are NLA, but if you find any the mirror will fit either left or right side (not handed).
Normally, cars were delivered with only a driver's side mirror, unless a passenger side was ordered specially.
The trapazoid shape mirrors were used on later models and are now available again from BMW, and would not look out of place, like the '74-'76 flag mirrors.

the Turf 1600 are the correct ones for your very early '68 (VINs began with 1660001). I'm sure someone on the board can come up with a used one for you.

They only came from the factory on the drivers side, but it's simple enough to add one to the other side.

If you'll drop me an e-mail I'll measure where the correct holes are as my '69 still has its original mirror. I'll also be glad to forward you a column I did on refurbishing those early mirrors if you find one that needs replating, has broken or de-silvered glass etc.

cheers
mike

FWIW - My '71 factory delivery never had a passenger side mirror. So to this day it keeps my neck limber looking around.

Subject: And the early '02 Side mirrors were made by 3 different

manufacturers in two different styles: one with two screw-in mounting holes, and another with one screw and one stud. The latter was meant for the very early 1600s where the mirror was mounted way forward on the door. The stud actually went through the leading edge of the door sheet metal and was visible with the door opened. Took the factory a year or so to figure out that with the mirror in that position, you couldn'n open the vent window but just a little. Then they moved it rearwards a couple of inches.

Mirror history lesson for today.

I have an early mirror that I don't need. If someone wants it, email me and I'll box it and ship it for $20. It's functional, but the mirror needs to be re-silvered. I don't even know if that's possible.

... and, of course, the early 02 mirror was a carry-over from the NK models which also had it mounted on the leading edge of the door. This didn't interfere with the vent window on the 4-door cars because the front edge of the window was farther back from the front edge of the door and the vent window was smaller. The mirror location was moved to behind the vent window on the NK cars sometime in '68 (I think). Does anyone know why the mirror location moved at that time?

Really, I have the mirror in the far fwd position on my 67 and I've never had trouble with the vent window? Maybe it won't open to the maximum point, I don't think I have ever tried opening it all the way. I'll have to experiment later...

Incidentally on my '66-68 1600-2's where the mirror is mounted on the front of the door... I have not heard of that problem of not being able to open the wing window all the way. Mine open just fine... In some seat positions though the pillar for the wing blocks some of the mirror. In my 6 footer seating position I end up looking through the wing glass at the mirror...

I added a pass side early mirror and though I have seen factory photos showing the pass side ones mounted farther back like the later position I mounted mine forward on the door for sake of uniformity. It's at its max adjustment to get it into proper viewing position for me.

P.S. my beater Granada 1600-2 will be at the Bay Area 02 Swap & Show on Saturday, in all it's faded patina'd glory. Maybe I'll even have my Sting-Rays on the roof again..... :)

P.P.S Mike, I got to meet Brian Morgan last Friday at Thunder Hill where he was doing a few articles including one on the 1800TI/SA I work on for Pat de Witt. It was a pleasure to finally meet him, and get to work with him a little.

Thanks for all of the info, I think I might have one of the real early mirrors somewhere, I had never seen one on another '02 so I wasn't sure if it was correct.

Lots of information in Macartney's 2002 Guide. If you don't have one, get one. It's "required reading" for 02 owners.

The mirror styles, with photos AND the diagram indicating the measurements of the mounting holes are found on pages 179 and 180.

Does anyone know if part # 07129925804 is the cage nut to attach the base of the mirror to the drivers door? The picture on reoloem.com isn't very detailed.
