Subject: Major Update for the ALPINA 2002 race car ("Langnese")

When communicating with ALPINA they always refer to the car as the "Langnese" 2002 race car (more on Langnese another time, they were the sponsor for 1974). The car has been at Hamlin Fabrication in Sonoma since mid February. A number of other time critical projects took front row, my car took a back seat for a while (which was fine by me, nice to have my garage back for a while), what is contained in these pics represents about 30 hours of work. The rear clip is back on, the roll cage is complete (re-done where necessary and made safe, the dash support is back in. Yesterday I delivered two doors, an OE steering column, the Scheel 302-N racing bucket (glass shell only with runners) and various other otdds and ends. Lots of tears and rips in the sheet metal have been filled/repaired (still more to do). Now that he has the doors he will install those to make sure everything is in line before he puts the final welds into the rear clip. The nose (skin) was also cut off and the new OE euro 74 nose will go back on. After that is done then the steering gets the once over and then its back home. I will be back up there next week to see what is what so another update then. So far the car has "Siennabraun" brown quarters, an "Agave" green (I think) deck lid, the doors I purchased from double o2 salvage are "Golf" yellow and "Sahara" beige (I believe or may just dirty "Chamonix" white, and the hood I am not even sure of - no doubt something different. Quite a patchwork of classic BMW colors. The work done is some of the best I think I have ever seen.

Here are a few pics....I have about 30 new ones on my picture site. Enjoy.

Thanks for the update!

I'm going to have to start saving my pennies to make a trip to CA for the debut of your car when it's finally done.

the rear panel and dash support sheet metal came out of a '74 INKA car. Matt McGinn helped me with a bunch of the sheet metal pieces - if he lived a little closer I would probably send the car to him to fab the body work - unfortunately with fuel prices what they are it would probably cost 3-4k to ship the car there.

VERY, very cool!! I can't stop drooling....

Are these for the turning radius so the wide tires still roll at full lock? Do you have any pics of the interior front wheel wells (forward and rear areas of the front wheel wells)?

Yes they are. The fronts are 11x15. The car has a homologated rack and pinion steering arrangement - everything is moved back (everything being the motor and trans) by about 2" as well. So much was done to this chassis to make it a "race car" which is why I didn't simply take a cleaner shell and try to convert it (plus it wouldn't have been "the" car).

are you going for 100% race car authenticity? Using every part that the car was race team used back in the day? (i know it's a bit relative as parts are always being changed and upgraded) Or are some parts just going to be too rare and expensive to source out and use? I think it's amazing project you have going.

cheers.

good luck brotha!

the car came complete for the most part - minus the front/rear flares and front spoiler. It isn't possible any longer to put a car like this together with period correct parts because those parts just don't exist (from virtually any source <new or used>). Where it makes sense to make upgrades and or changes they are made (ie., new Carillo connecting rods versus lightened up OE steel rods).

some of those "before" rollbar shots are just plain scary!

Top notch work, looking forward to seeing more!

History in the making, I am just humbled by all the work and the significance of this restoration. It is a privilege to be just a mere witness! I would have given up long time ago! This is huge! thanks for sharing!
