Subject: Throw-out Bearing grease?

What kind of grease do I use on a new (323i) throw-out bearing? Wheel bearing lube? Do I pack it in like the wheel bearings?

Thanks in advance.

Last weekend I installed my 5-speed and used good ol' universal bearing grease. I didn't drown it in it, just some on the shaft.

As I recall they are pre-lubed and require no additional grease. Just a bit on the shaft so it'll slide easily.

BMW actually recommends the use of NO lubricant on the input shaft housing/sleeve, when using new style plastic composite housed bearing assemblies. (most BMW release bearings have been updated to the plastic type).

With that said - I use Moly grease, or high quality bearing grease anyway. On all types of release bearings. never fails. makes pedal buttery happy-smooth.

Make sure you take some emory cloth / fine sand paper to smooth out any grooves in the shaft, while you're there. lubricate pivot pin and slave cylinder pushrod end, too.

No additional lubricant required INSIDE the bearing.

FWIW: Porsche uses no less than THREE different lubricants for release bearing, input shaft splines, and pivot points on levers....overkill? maybe....but Porsches are single purpose vehicles: To be driven FAST and near the LIMIT.

Do you trust loctite and locking plates on a 350 hp / 1895 lb racecar? I don't! ;-)

I've been taught to use silver anti seize compound because it doesn't attract dust like grease does

Yeah, but that stuff is AWFUL granular isn't it? BMW says that grease atttracts dust, which in turn grinds down the sliding areas of nylon/plastic bearing surfaces. I'd think anti-seize would be even MORE destructive in that situation - no?
