Subject: 'whirring' sound

I've had a 'whirring' sound ever since I got the car and it's now starting to bother me. So, I come to you to seek advice...

At first I thought it was the center support bearing (which was in terrible shape) -- although after replacement the sound remains. Then my attention turned to the transmission, however when the engine was replaced I picked up a little-used tranny as well...no fixy there either. The sound is somewhere in the final drive of the car -- it is dependant on vehicle speed. Also when the passenger window is down I hear a 'tick--tick' noise (not rhythmic -- more intermittent) thus leading me to conclude that a wheel bearing might be the culprit. Does this sound right to you, or is it possibly my rear differential? The car drives fine and isn't giving me any indications of something coming apart -- so whatever it is isn't too critical for daily operation (its just getting annoying). Any information you might have would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Bill

Ride in the back seat and see if you can figure out which side.

Click click is usually a bad hub and stub shaft,
and whirring sounds like the diff.
But I've had a rear bearing 'whirr'- more like 'sizzzz'

hth,

Rad fan? I replaced the fan when the old one got chewed out. the new one is the 400mm tropical one, it makes quite a whiring noise, compared to the old one. Just a thought. Beaner7102

I thought of the fan as well...but proved that theory wrong as well (the sound is dependant on vehicle speen not engine speed). Thanks for the thought though!

I have a sound like that, except it is only in first gear. It changes with the car's movement. I diagnosed it a while ago from the differential. It is a common problem on some 02's.

Subject: tick tick - check brake pads

see if one of the four ride up a bit, then drop back into place.

Sometimes they catch on a high spot on the rotor
