Thread Topic: Rerouting drain tubes from sunroof Threaded

Subject: Rerouting drain tubes from sunroof

I have a 1976 2002 and see where the drain tubes for the sunroof are routed to dump into the rockers. I would like to dump the excess water somewhere outside of the body.

Any suggestions? How/where?

I kept the front drains in the same spot - down the "A" pillars that exit out the rear of the wheel opening. Warning, re-installing those front hoses are a all out pain. Took me several hours to fish them through. You may want to use cable guide or something. There is a bend right where the a pillar meets the front dash area that you can't get to and have to really muck around to get it in there. Better to go from the exit to the drain than from the drain to the exit - IMHO.

There are several options for the rear. Depends on what you want to drill, wheel wells are an option as is the trunk floor and any other spot where you can run flexible hose.

I'm sure others will offer suggestions.

Good luck,

Len

Subject: Rerouting rear sunroof drain tubes:

Remove rear seat back and cushion, then the upholstery panels under the quarter windows. You'll see the white plastic drain hoses stuffed down in the quarter panels. Fish 'em out.

Carefully drill a hole in the inner fender arch so that it's behind the quarter panel upholstery. Enlarge the hole 'till the hose is a tight fit. Be sure and touch up the hole's raw edge with paint and let dry. Poke hose thru hole and seal the joint.

Be sure and cut the excess hose off once you've re-routed it, or it'll touch the tire while cornering. The moaning noise will travel up the hose into the roof so that you'd swear there was a ghost under your headliner (ask me how I know this!).

Reinstall everything and you're done.

Hi,

I chose not to drill holes in my car and came up with a good solution to work around it.

For the rear drains, pull the white hose behind the back panels to route to the trunk. You have to remove a small amount of sponge above the wheel arch but it's a pretty big hole and easy to replace the sponge once it's done.

Then, add extension clear plastic hose (get the right diameter to fit tightly over or inside the existing hose). Run this along the sides of the trunk under the trunk panels and then turn them in so that they both meet behind the license plate. With the panels back in, you really can't see the hoses at all.

Where they meet, you can look around and find existing holes in the trunk. I bought a cheap plastic T, put the two tubes on and pointed the other end down and out the car. I put a small extension underneath so that the water doesn't collect anywhere. Pay some attention to ensure the hoses always have a slight downward angle so water won't collect anywhere.

It sounds difficult but it really isnt. And it works! Dry rockers for several years and easily removable. Drilling in the wheel arch works too, but I just hesitate to drill if I can't help it.

Hope this helps. If you want photos just let me know.

Jason

Check out Keth's write-up on my2002tii.com. I did something similar to what he did, but welded in a piece of metal tube in the wheel well which the hose connects to on the inside, rather than a plastic pvc threaded sleeve. I covered the weld seams with POR15 and then seam sealer on both sides so it was a water tight and rust proof connection. If you have the headliner down, I'd recommend replacing the tubes as well, as there is probably a bunch of gunk blocking the exit into the tubes. And if you do that you might as well POR15 the exit tube and track inside the roof....etc..etc.

It never ends.

Run it on the outer part of the shock tower-Fish it thru that reinforcement and down over the spine of the tower, and drill a hole in the spare tire well sheetmetal in the corner so it can dump to ground.

Usually there is enough drain hose to make it. Just barely. Usually if you're lucky.

maybe i'm missing something but- what is the actual problem with the stock location. now I can see a neglected car with leaves and crap falling into an open sunroof and down into the rockers- that is a problem. but a well maintaned car wouldn't have that problem. at speed in the wet your rockers are not going to be dry anyhow. and i don't know about you but i usually close the sunroof when it rains. Also it seems an occasional dose of thinned oil down those drain tubes on a hot day and your rockers may benefit from the access. maybe it's just me but the rear well with a hole in it seems to be an invitation to water entry. I like stacey's idea but it still allows mud and crap to get slung it the hose by the tires. Matt's placement seems ok but that area is one of the more rust prone on the car so again it seems better to keep it sealed. Keiths solution has a low spot in the hose that could collect gunk from above or stuff slung in by the wheels and potentially clog. I thought long and hard on this when rebuilding my car and looked in the rockers and they were fine in the drain area. maybe the factory guys wanted to find a spot that would not be exposed so as to reduce the chance of rot taking hold. Lots of experience here on the faq and many have more than I so I'm throwing this out for discussion.

...EVEN ON A GOOD DAY , DIRT, DUST, compost material settle
into the rocker boxed area clogging the 'water outlets' -
which are just tiny gaps in the rocker section stampings,
in the bottom seam. After factory painting, undercoating,
repairs, more dirt washing down from the sunroof frame,
these 'drain' gaps become blocked.
Same flawed design on MGB's (tiny seam gaps).. So the makers routing
of the sunroof drains INTO the boxed section really makes
no sense for long term survivability. And water IS alway flowing even when the roof is closed and 'sealed' - water always enters .
Gathering hoses to exit as one at the rear of the trunk also invites hose clogging, and un-needed lengths of hoses.
Matt McGinn's solution is the best - factory like - to the point evacuation
of water, straight down flow, and with professional body sealing,
painting techniques, no leaking back into the trunk, or rusting of the hole for the hose.

That looks great. I'll do it!
OK, so now where can I go to get 1/4-panel welded back on?
Seriously, that looks like a good route. But is it possible to snake the tube that way with the 1/4-panel intact?
