Subject: Body guys - Re: Rust - Yay or nay on this logic..

Car is beginning to show some light rust on the undercarriage. No holes or rot, just rust but it is starting to become 'textured' so it is likely beginning to progress.

My thoughts are to remove it all off with a wire brush. Then use some product like Kleen Strip to remove the remaining rust. This would be a remover, not a converter.

After that I figured some POR-15 or equivalent product finished off by a coating of Wurth undercoating.

Good? Or should I do something different to arrest and prevent future rusting on the undercarriage? Any harm in combining the above products, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

I would classify myself as amateur body guy too. But I have found from a few older car restos that underbody rust can originate from the inside. Have you pulled carpets and taken a look at the interior tub?

I tried a chemical rust remover once long ago and vowed never again. As I recall, it was messy, involved chemical burns, elbow grease, and still didn't remove all the rust. Maybe there is stuff that works now, who knows.

In typical job, I try to mechanically remove the rust (rotary wire brush, spot blaster, grinder, and/or sawzall+welder), spot apply POR-15 to react with any stray cancer cells, acid etch prime & finish coating.

I recall a thread a few months ago where folks were not impressed with long term performance of POR-15. Jury's still out with me.

Remember, POR 15 only works on rust, not on clean metal. SO if you clean it completely, youre better off to use a good rust preventative primer (rted-lead for example). If you only get the surface rust off, POR 15 will attack the remaining rust and neutralize it.

Technically you can use "Metal Ready" on bare metal to accelerate a light surface rust which will get the POR-15 to stick to clean metal. I used this process when painting my trunk.

Just spray it with a rust converter and then hit it with POR 15. The best solution until you can take it apart, soda blast and e-coat.

Good tips. Thanks guys.

I think I will just clean it up like I thought about and put on either Eastwood or POR-15. If I recall there is a black POR-15 so that will give it a nice look underneath.

Mars,
I would recommend Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator, followed by one of their Chassis Blacks. Rust Encapsulator seems to be a better primer over the non-rusty places than POR-15 and similiarly effective over surface rust. The Eastwood products are also easier to use, both application and clean-up.
