Subject: Oil filler cap leak

what's the best way to stop this? i really don't want to have to buy one of the new plastic caps but i just can't persuade my original cap to stop leaking. any hints appreciated.

You probably just need a new rubber gasket or a thicker one.

Buy a gasket or buy a new cap and take it off of that. You can also bend the the catches a bit underneath the cap to make for a tighter seal.

That is the first thing to making a tight seal.
If there is oil on those surfaces it will not seal and will seep.

If not, rub the gasket and mating surface down with a paper towel to get it nice and dry.

As a temporary fix I cut a new gasket from a bicycle inner tube. A bicycle inner tube is a handy item to keep around for just such cases.

New rubber gasket is $2, and yes, clean both the gasket and valve cover area before installing.
