OK, first time out in the 02 for the year.

But first, I had nothing to do for the first heat, so I hitched rides in every cool car that I could:

Mk.I Jetta. Felt like it was gonna fall apart but decently fast:

and here in the M Roadster. Rock solid and smooth car with a decent amount of power. Love the brushed stainless interior.

I had to explain to the guy what a 2002 is...

and finally a ride in the C6 Z06 w/R-tires

Thats a lot of car to throw around, but when that motor grabs ahold, holy crap. It gives you new respect for american engineers.

Then I ran the 02, and I got screwed cuz it started raining. Not too many pictures since the cameraman didn't want to stand in the rain.

Look ma, no hands!

I musta been letting the wheel unwind or something, I dunno.

New magnets and better matched paint to cover-up all my bad stuff!

The course was very fast, with a third gear straight going into a tight hairpin (1st gear for most). I'd be seriously hauling in 3rd gear, then lock up the brakes going into the hairpin (running bald race tires in rain of course), then slid it sideways thru.

I was unopposed in FSP, so I just goofed around. I did beat the times of people from EP, so next time I may just bump myself to to EP to have some competition without modding the car anymore.
Anyways, nothing broke, so I call that win.

Next comes Rallycross:

in our sweet ride... a 2008 Ford Focus.

It was a pretty damn nice and solid car with a peppy motor, but the automatic tranny was really frustrating.

We did horrible things to that car....

Once the course got dry in the afternoon, it was scary fast. I bottomed out the suspension in that car many times, and there are many reports I made it backfire somehow. I didn't hear it, but the course workers said it sounded like a shotgun. I have no idea how you can make a stock 08 Focus backfire...

Three co-drivers, and three trophies, at a Great Lakes Divisional rallycross. I placed third in SF (Stock FWD), thanks to a huge penalty from nicking a finish cone. Dick placed 2nd in SF. Ben placed 2nd in PF. He ran in the prepped class just so we didn't have to switch three drivers during one heat.

No problems, nothing broke, returned unwashed FTW.

did you rent that focus? you say "returned washed" leads me to believe that you went to a Hertz and rented the thing.

Nice pics! wish they did that in MA!

Think I'd get in trouble if I showed up in a rental? I'd love to do something like that but not in my own car!

Well, you might discuss it with the rally chairman first.
They might already have a rental car specifically for that purpose. Some regions have an old beater set aside for newbies, and 5+ people can co-drive it at an event at a cost of like 25 bucks.
We used a frame damaged Nissan Maxima for that purpose at my first event. I think it got sold though and OVR no longer has their own car.
But while driving it, I learned that you don't get very high speeds and its fairly safe for the car. I then had the confidence to do other things at next events.
Some regions might not be as safe as OVR in their course setup though, who knows. It's risky of course, but you gotta do something incredibly stupid once in a while. Always have a backup plan... such as dragging a totalled car to the side of the road and planting a dead animal nearby....
