Subject: I will be adding another car to my stable.

Hopefully this Saturday I will be picking up an 1987 E30 325 to become my new daily driver. The car's body is in pretty good shape. It's schwarz with black covers over the seats. The bottle cap wheels are nicely painted with new wheels.
Engine and tranny (it's an automatic) seem ok in the test drive I made.
Hasn't had the timing belt changed (might as well change the water pump)
It has sunroof and AC (needs charging).
The seller told me it's time for a rear brake pads replacement.
The front windshield is cracked.
It will require plenty of TLC in the interior.
* The glove box has no latch,
* The digital clock is not working,
* Some faceplate plastic covers are missing
* The steering wheel has a 4 inch circumference segment missing,
* The passenger side power window is not working,
* The dash has several cracks,
* The driver's side under dash cardboard is missing,
* The manual sunroof handle works but does not stay on.
* The bumper side sidemarkers are missing (maybe this is why the turn signals don't work)

Besides the brilliant minds on this board that I will reach out to for advice on this new acquisition, is there a forum that shares tips, DIY's articles, etc. for E30's?
I'll post pictures on Saturday.

Victor

Hope to see the new ride soon, Victor!

I agree with Esty.

We have two automatic etas at home, an '86 two door and an '87 four door. Great cars for the local super-congested traffic conditions (over 1 million cars in 3500 square miles).

One under the hood and one in the trunk, what's the deal?

Subject: Victor, I may be able to help with the malfunctioning clock

if it's the 9 button version (no trip computer, just day, date and temp). When you get to it drop me a line. I've been through the "contact the mother ship" problem (random flashing of all the digits together) and no display at all...

I've got an eta 87 stick shift and love it as a winter car--keeps my 02s away from the tinworm.

cheers

Victor, your 50 years are starting to show....he he... Are you SURE about the one under the hood?

Victor, I think Harry got you there! haha

Are you sure the other battery isn't the big arse air filter? At least the one in my 90 325i looks like a battery case. : )

Harry,

I've got three E30's, my girlfriend drives my 91 318i 4 door 5 speed, my daughter drives my 89 325i 4 door 5 speed, and my youngest daughter will soon be driving my 86 325 5 speed.

Hopefully you got it for a good price, they are so much more fun to drive with a 5 speed. Just drive it till your automatic goes south and then do a 5 speed conversion.

Hi Victor:

You'll enjoy the E30...they are rock solid cars! We've owned three, and my son in Ohio still has his first car ('86 325ES) - which he has completely converted to a 325is.

E30's are easy to work on except for the underside....removing a 5 speed tranny for clutch replacement is absolutely the worst job "ever"!

My son'e and my goal is to find an E30 M3 and do a complete rennovation on it.....that will most likely get expensive, but I just love those cars! :-)

Take Care,

John

'85 318i (My 1st Bimmer), '86 325ES (Son still has), '87 325is (Other Son's - Totalled)

E30's are great cars. One of the last BMW's that can be worked on by shade tree mechanics. Damn near bomb proof cars.

My wife still regrets selling her 86 325. (no 'e', no "i", just a 325 that year)

Congrats on the new car!

I LOVE ole E30s. If you need any tech advice / how-to stuff - feel free to e mail me. If you don't know how old the timing belt is - do it the week you get it home!

water pump
timing belt
tensioner pulley
new clips to secure wiring loom on timing cover (2)
lots of cleaning solvent for the area around the crank sprocket (gets awful cruddy down there.)
I like installing new cap n rotor too, while I'm there.

blue loctite for the 6 13mm crank pulley bolts
follow torque specs where possible.

You can remove and install a windshield yourself in under 30 minutes...Ok maybe under 60. The key is leaving the SEAL ON THE CAR!!!

If you remove the seal - you're screwed. :-(

remove tha discard the locking strip - gently push out glass - reinstall new glass into old seal using a little bit of soapy water in a squirt bottle, and plastic scraper tools. Install new lock strips.

Get a Bentley book and you'll have about all the basic info you need.

Have Fun! - they last forever (had one w. 317,000 miles on it, and it ran like a(n ugly) Swiss watch!) Currently driving my 2nd 1990 325i, and my 3rd E30.
