Subject: To Infinity and beyond...

So - out driving around yesterday, and my driver's side caliper starts sticking. It's been sticking since I did a brake bleed. Researched the FAQ yesterday, and I'm going to upgrade the hoses before I pull the caliper off. So - the car goes back on jackstands last night, wheels come off in preparation for the hoses.

So - this morning, I notice an oil leak on the floor. Crawl under the car, and it looks like it is coming off of the little block on the back of the head where the distributor bolts up. Go grab my faithful 10 mm stubby wrench, and sure enough, the bolts aren't completely tight. So - I'm tightening them up, and the wrench slips out of my hands. I expect to hear it fall on the garage floor, but there is no sound. Look in there, but there is no wrench hanging. Look around as much as I can - no wrench. Stick my hand in there to feel on top of the transmission housing - no wrench. Look and feel around the top of the starter - no wrench.

Well - no big deal - it's only a 10 mm. Not like there are many 10 mm fittings on an 02.

Rats...

Once I get the car back together, I'm sure it'll fall out when I'm driving.

After you find it,
the next thing to check (for the oil leak)
is the o- ring on the distributor. They
tend to crack if they're old.

And I know you don't want to hear this,
but most of the sticking caliper problems
are rust in the caliper... if you're up to it,
cleaning them out and installing new seals
is messy, but not hard- if you have access
to compressed air.

But at your current rate, I'd suspect you may need a
few more tools! I know I have at least 4 10mm wrenches
for just that reason...

Thanks Toby. Good call on the o-ring. It'll be the next place I check if the oil doesn't stop.

So - since I can't find my 10 mm stubby - I decided to order one. Immediately, the first thing I think of is "Snap-on". Go to their webpage, and of course, they have 'em. For about $20. For 1 wrench.

Not. I can just see that one dissappearing into the abyss.

I just ordered a craftsman. Good warranty in case I break one. Only $6. Perfect.

Yeah - I thought about rust in the caliper. Actually came really close to ordering the caliper re-build kit yesterday. Then, my search said to try brake lines first. So - I've got the new ones coming (stainless - teflon coated), and I'll do those. If that doesn't work, then I'll pull off both calipers and re-build, change springs, etc...

But - I'm hopeful that it's just hoses.

Later,

Ken

the best 10mm wrenches are the ones that come in the German car tool kits, they are slim and very light - I carry one in my pocket - and I have used it often!

I would get a flashlight and look around. I carry one of those too!

So - about 6 months or so ago, I put urethane motor mounts on the car. Brand new. Well - turns out that my left mount wasn't bonded correctly. Was making a left turn, and the entire engine jumped, smashing the distributor cap against the electronic ignition module. Cap shattered. Coasted into a parking lot, and I could find the pieces of the cap, but never could find the rotor. Figured it stayed in the street and got pulverized.

Two weeks ago - I was messing with something, and found the rotor sitting in that exact spot - on the frame rail.

Well - to be honest, I hadn't looked there for my wrench. So - just went out to double double check and whaddya know! There it was.

Bill - I owe you yet again!

It's happened to me too. That spot seems to be the Bermuda's Triangle on 2002's......

Try running a telescoping magnet (snap on and craftsman have them). This seem to work well when you don't have eyes on your finger tips.

As nice as the telescoping magnet is, I've found something that's even better in some situations. I recently got a LED light that's on a flexible shaft with a small magnet on the business end. I got it from Sears or Eastwood. It's been very useful a couple of times but I'm not going to give away the old telescoping magnet I have.
