Thread Topic: Car rolls with Clutch Pedal IN Threaded

Subject: Car rolls with Clutch Pedal IN

If i'm at a light and in first gear with the clutch pedal depressed, the car starts to roll real slow. Is this the clutch going or the MC/slave??

The clutch pedal also releases just off the floor (which has 2 layers of carpet from PO) , which is as far out as my mechanic could get it...

(I was going to check the MC and slave today for any leaks...)

any thoughts? oh, and I've never replaced the clutch before, but how much time do you anticipate a newbie ( with friend) to do the job? any good links on this?

thanks again,
Baron

or you have air in the system, and aren't getting full travel.

But in my experience, the clutch usually bleeds itself.

The thing to check is travel at the fork- you should get
on the order of 1" or so...

ok, tell us what all the 'mechanic' has done to the car already

look for leaks inside the boot at the slave cylinder, under the trans - first

FLUSH the clutch AND brake fluid system.

The clutch does not auto bleed itself - or rid itself of years of accumulated muck. Flush it with a pressure bleeder - now - and
after you replace the offending master and slave cylinders.

Hi,
in most cases, if the clutch is older and the master/slave cylinder
both are okay, then the pilot bearing would be my next concern.
when this small bearing begins to fail, it will hold onto the input shaft of
the trans and make the car move slowly. this part is almost
always over looked when the clutch kit is changed. $16 part,$300
labor. usually i replace the rear main seal also when i do
a clutch kit.
good luck

thanks for the info. I live in a condo with no garage, so it might be next weekend that I can get underneath to check things out...

I don't appear to have lost any fluid in the reservoir, which leads me to think that it might be the pilot bearing, but I won't know till I check the other stuff out.

keep you posted!

Subject: Two more things to check ...

The easy one: Check the adjustment of the rod between the brake pedal and the master cylinder. You can do this through the slot in the carpet from inside the car. If the lock nut has come loose, the rod will slowly turn and shorten as you use the clutch, leading to incomplete release. If that's the case, readjust and tighten the lock nut. While you're in there, peel back the boot and check for a fluid leak from the master cylinder.

The hard one: The clutch disc might not be sliding smoothly on the tranny input shaft splines. The effect is the same as a failing pilot bearing that gueststone02 described. The labor is also the same, plus cleaning and lubing the splines.

most likely slave and or master cylinder. My problem was with master. Same situation as yours. The clutch would start to engage on it's own.

A lot of times it;s a leak internal to the cylinder itself, so no fluid loss.

the master is easy to get to, the slave is a little harder, then you'll need to bleed the system. So, 2 to 4 hours, depending on how fast you work, and the tools that you have. Get a Motive brake bleeder. It will save you hours in the long run.
