Subject: Refinished wheels not holding air

I found a set of later style factory alloys and had them stripped and powder-coated. I had TireVan come out to the house several weeks ago and mount & roadforce balance them with new 185/70-13 Yokos from Tire Rack. I had stored them on their sides in the basement, and went to put them on the car yesterday AM and they were "flat" with ~15 psi. Pumped up to 35 psi and installed them - last evening 2 were flat again, 2 were lower than 35. Pumped them all up to 40 - losing pressure by this AM.
Powder-coater hasn't experienced this problem before - haven't heard back from TireVan.
Any ideas? TIA!

It's a long shot, but what about the valve stems? If the wheels are straight and the tires are new, that's the only immediate thing that I can think of to offer up...

take them to a tire shop and they can seal the rims...i had that problem with 2 of my wheels and the fix was fast, easy & inexpensive

Subject: Refinished wheels = new air leakage

the 'powder coating' process caused uneven
coating where the valve stem seals with the hole in the rim.
Break down one bead and remove the valve stem.
Did you use the old stems? or fit NEW ones ?
Look at the hole for uneven surface - cause for leakage -
or the valve cores may have been not tightened
into the rubber stem ???

Fill the tire up with air again, and spray the tire with a foam type glass cleaner, and you will eventually find the leak when you see tiny bubble appear.

Good Luck

Subject: New rubber valve stems, & I tightened the stem cores...

yesterday before inflating them. I do recall the stem hole looking a bit rough on 1 or 2 wheels, so that might be the source of the leak.
Maybe the 2-piece metal/rubber valve stems will help? I've never had a problem with the metal stems, but have read about them leaking.
I was afraid the bead might be affected by the paint. I'll take them off and use some water or glass cleaner as mentioned and look for bubbles.

I once had a problem with a set of early aluminum wheels, one of which was more porous than others. The leak was very very slow and using the tire in the bathtub diagnostic tool proved not all that helpful. One of two small bubbles - we figured the leak occurred when the wheel/tire was under pressure and flexing. I minimized the problem so that it was practically non-existent by painting the inside of the rim with a common epoxy.

The "porosity" issue caused me concern, so that I considered using inner tubes. I later swapped the rims for something in a "lighter" 14" steel.

I had the same thing happen to two front wheels/tires on the touring.

Collision Wheel did the work, the rims are painted not powdercoated.

They used the metal stems and the surface on the back of the rim where the stem seal sets was uneven.

Mike Hannigan found the problem and machined them smooth and all is well.

Note: I failed to have the tires rebalanced after he did that and now I am suffering from a shimmy. I am reluctant to have them balanced locally because I do not want to remove the center caps. They are the only set I have and we sold at at BMW - Max.

So, I have to find a road balancing outfit that can balance without removing the center caps. I think Radial Tire in Silver Spring will do them.

Those new wheels will really look nice on your car! Make it look more German than British.

Good Luck

with the wheels on the car, as they have been doing for decades.
These wheels are now a bit grayer/less silver than I'd prefer, but certainly are light being 13" with the 185/70s vs the 15" Panasports! I got the Panasports back on in time to run up to Summit Point for the NCC BBQ held after driver's school. Now to pay a visit to the neighbor's kiddie pool!
