Nice roads to drive an '02 on. Went rafting on the New River with the Boy Scouts last Monday, came in on route 60 which was quite twisty. Later we stayed at Seneca Shadows campground near Seneca Rocks. The roads near there & out to Spruce Knob were full of curves and dips, too. Route 33 between Judy Gap, WV and Harrisonburg, VA was fun as well. Does anybody drive on any of these roads? Beautiful area and I am eager to go back to explore the Shenandoah Valley. Too bad it was 7 of us packed into a Dodge Caravan instead of really enjoying the roads & scenery in my '02! Camping, hiking in WV is a blast, so put a tent in your '02 & go check it out. {Oh, & we went into D.C. also. Caught the the Udvar-Hazy Natl. Air & Space Museum near Dulles airport -- that's an amazing collection of rare planes! The Native American Museum in Wash. is fascinating -- the museum is graceful & inviting.}

Jim,

I live 18 miles east of Harrisonburg, VA. I "get out" on Rt. 33 West, periodically. You're correct, sir! It's a cool '02 drive!

Maybe, we can have another Mid-Atlantik 'O2 Fest, here, in the Shenandoah Valley!(?)
There's a 3/8 mile, progressively banked oval, for autocross. There's Luray Caverns for the "Show and Shine".(The Morgan Club is there every year.) There's Massanutten Resort for lodging, mountain biking, water park, golf, tennis, etc. Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, in addition to the Shenandoah River, and lots of curvy roads.

When are you coming back to "God's Country"?

Regards,

Randy: I don't know when I will be back that way, but I took note of things while there. I noticed a lot of Harley riders enjoying the interesting roads and scenery, but saw no vintage BMW's, just SUV's & trucks. I find Civil War history fascinating, so a trip through the Shenandoah Valley is on my list of things to do. I need an opportunity to get away in the '02 w/my son and a tent!!

I'm in for a drive as soon as I get Henrietta back on the road. WVirgina is cool. I have good memories visiting there in my younger days. Once visiting some family friends in Harrisonburg (in a big RV we had for a little while)and the glass places in morgantown and the monorail (in the 320i? all three of us would have fit in the back, this was like 25 years ago). Been back a couple of times as an adult now that Im living in NJ. I forgot how nice some of the roads are. One of my best friends is moving to Md, and since I dont ride a M/C at the moment I guess ill follow him in my 2002 while we check it out. Does living in the mountains turn someone into hillbillies? whats up with that? it reminds me of the santa cruz mountains in Calif. Bunch of freaks.

Oh my god, oh my god!!!!! You drove by my old house in Harrisonburg on Rt. 33!!! Why didn't you tell me you were going, I would have come too. My heart is bleeding now - Seneca Rocks! That means you went through Dayton and Bridgewater. I have to sit down. I'm so glad you enjoyed my native area. Did you get any photos?!

EDIT - next time any of you are on Rt. 33 going towards WV, check out address 4360 Rawley Pike. That's my house. It's on the right, right in front of Mole Hill. Think of how close you used to be to me!!!

That is the best idea ever. I'll be there!

Biscuit3: I guess I did not recall that was where you were from before heading overseas. Missed my '02 there. An overloaded Dodge Caravan is just not all that fun on twistie-turnies. Anyhow, that part of the world is very popular with we Ohio-types. We ran into a number of people from Ohio, incl. a cyclist who'd pedalled all the way from Cincinnati. He teaches Biology at Walnut Hills H.S. and totally does his own thing -- very smart young guy. Seemed like 1/2 the campground was from Ohio. {BTW: on the way back from V at the V in May, we stopped at the Hooters in Charlestown, WV. What we will remember more than the hootchie-waitresses will be the Creepie old man who was oggling my 16-yr.-old son and going about begging in the restaurant....scarier than Freddie Kruger.}

Jen, Anna and I spent the 4th to 7th in Berkley Springs. Flew into the Potomic Air park and had family pick us up.
My Father in law and I went to the hardware store and bought motor home tie downs to tie down the Bonanza.....
The pic below was when we were there last spring in the WRX. The river is the Potomic and the bridge is the oldest privatly owned wooden toll bridge in the US.

Harv,

I am familiar with the name of that privately-owned toll bridge to be: "The Troll Bridge". Did the toll booth person send out a can-on-a-stick? They used to.

Ashleigh,

I go out on Rt. 33 West, and take the Silver Lake Road route, into Dayton.
It just breaks the "same old same old" routine. I've been by your old place alot, I just didn't know where your crib was, before now. I was out in Hinton, just the other week. I buzzed up to Riven Rock Park, too, but there wasn't much happening.

The towns of Dayton and Bridgewater, had "buggy lanes" added to the shoulders of Rt. 42, recently, too. That'll make things a bit safer. It won't keep you from having to creep along behind farm tractors when the Mennonites have to travel a longer distance, and don't want to hitch up a buggy or ride their bike.

Haha, good to know they finally added another lane for buggies! That will also keep all the horse poop on one side of the road!

Subject: Jim and Harv - WV is home for Ruth and I

Back when this 02 madness started and we started having group drives, one of the favorites was one we had that centered around Canaan Valley. About 15 of us (you may recognize your running buddy, Mike Self in the picture)stayed there and made trips to Cass Scenic Railway, Seneca Rocks and all the other roads around that area.

Both of my boys and I summited Seneca Rocks right up the north face, thats right, I "used to rock climb". My wife lived just south of the New River where you rafted, yes she has all of her teeth and she has sisters.

Also, Nathan and I CANOED the New River you rafted and lived to tell the stories. Did you get to walk through Thurmond? For those that have not been there, it is an old ghost town that boasts of poker games that far surpass Vegas. The town does not have a main street. The railroad runs right through the middle of town! Several movies have used the old facades for old time movies sets.

Harv, did you eat at Teri's? We have a place nine miles from Berkeley Springs! We built it while the boys were young and still have it. That is where we went to shoot and ride dirt bikes. Hope to retire there someday. Several of us are staying over in there on the way to the Watkins Glen event this fall. I believe that bridge is near the Greenbridge State Park in MD. The park has a nice 15 mile circuit for dirt bikes and that park has more copperhead snakes than any other place I have seen.

Jim, not sure if you went by Wardensville, WV. That is where my boys went to outdoor wilderness camp for many summers. I forgot how many timber rattlers we have seen in the George Washington Forest. We have climbed all over those ledges. Did you go through Elkins? Home of some of the best mountain crafts, music and talent in the world. If you are into paddling, I have paddled all of the rivers and creeks in that part of WV and some in VA. Evan and I have stories to tell of mountain biking down Spruce Knob through water up to the cross members on the mountain bicycles.

Oh well, you got the old guy thinking of home as John Denver would sing.....
