Subject: Engine selling & shipping advice

I need some advice.......
I'm abandoning my euro e21 (316) M42 conversion to devote my energies solely to my 1969 '02.
I've had a custom subframe built that makes the m42 look right at home but the m42 I have is older (180k) and has been sitting for 2 years. I have the transmission, ECU, AFM, wire harness, fuel pump, etc..
My question is, how should I sell it all? All together or simply sell the subframe? Who can tell me about shipping engines/tranny's.
TIA!

If I were you I'd go to home depot... grab yourself a pallet (or two) and some big ass bolts. Litterally bolt the subframe to a pallet, use a 2x4 or something else for makeshift SOLID motor mounts and place the motor on the subframe & pallet. Just use cheap wood & nails to box it all up and ship freight.

you'll always be better selling your stuff seperately but do you really have the time/energy/need for cash to part out everything seperately?? Intake, crank, block, head, gearbox, subframe, etc.??

Make a log splitter out of it.

I've been trying to sell my 94 E36 M42, with 68,000 miles, including all the goodies, DME, intake, exhaust and much more for $1,000.00

It has been about a year now, and I have still not sold it. I have talked to two serious buyers, and countless rice boys that now own 90% of the E30 and E36 M42 powered cars. The problem is that the rice boys will go to Kragen, get seven tubes of silicone, a drill hone, valve compound, a few cut up beer cans, and a bunch of clapped out used parts and patch together their 200,000 mile M42 instead of spending what I consider a bargain to purchase a low mileage motor. It is fucking insane; you should see some of the emails I have received from these guys... Most cannot construct a letter that you could have done in fourth grade, it is a bunch of text message crap shorthand. Once you read through their crap, they offer you $300.00 for your engine that you have spent six times that amount on.

I shit you not, I am so fucking sick of trying to sell my M42 for an $800.00 loss (I have over $1800 into it), that I am about ready to use it for an engine blow contest, or put it into a log splitter, old Caterpillar or something stupid like that. I've even been eyeing an Opal GT for $500.00 (with a blown engine), I may end up doing a hack swap on the Opal.

Whatever you do, do not waste your time on 318ti.org. I am now convinced that it has been taken over by 17 year old boys who only speak text, and don't have enough money to properly maintain a bicycle.

On a serious note, even my engine is worth so little that it is not cost effective to ship it via any trucking company person to person. If you know a shipping broker, of have the ability to ship it from your workplace it may be worth it. I once shipped A S14 short block from a freight terminal in California to his home in Florida, it was about $400.00

Also… M42 club seems to be less evil than 318ti.org

Okay Andy, how much for the subframe?

I honestly don't have a price tag in mind. It cost me a few hours in labor to get the subframe built and it looks great. I was going to throw everything on eBay and see what happens. I'm currently leaning toward listing it all together.

Peter

welcome to the world of e30's. they are so cheap that every baggypants in the world owns one and has zero money to maintain it. i will not sell to e30 owners anymore because of this. sure there are exceptions but i sell skidplates for these cars for 50 dollars less than they can get them anywhere else. i make about 12 bucks on one and when i tell them the price they want to know if i can ship it for that price. what a bunch of tools.

Andy, would you kindly take a photo of your subframe and send it to me at jafre@charter.net? I'm interested in perhaps doing this conversion and guidance on the subframe would be most helpful. Thanks
