They are among the top 10 best-sellers here (#1 is the Toyota Corolla). I haven't driven one, but rode as a passenger in a friend's. Quite comfortable for its size, peppy and great size for city driving.

Why gamble on a Mercedes Smart when you can get one of them for a lot less? I have read about the new Mazda 2 and, if they decide to sell it in the U.S., it could also be a good alternative.

It's probably not the most exciting car to drive... It is a toyota, at the very worst you would have reliable, well built car that will hold it's value. My wife drives a camry. It is a very strange car, everything works, it does'nt have rust issues, I don't have to clean fuses, the gauges don't jump when the lights are turned on, people do not bother us when we are out with : "what year is that?" or "I used to have one of those, I should have never sold it". Now if I could convince her to sell the POS and get a "normal" car.....

Its great, gets incredible gas mileage, I got to drive it and yes it was a little thrashy. However it drove nice, had comfy seats and even with the gauges in the center it didn't bug me.

I rented one of these and I'd say they're decent. The door access is second to none, so the grandparents will love it. It's not a sports car by any means but it's pretty frugal on the gas. One thing I will say is that it is no good in snow or ice. I didn't check, but I wouldn't be surprised if they come with high pressure, high efficiency tires.

Oh, and one of the glove box doors seems really really flimsy. If I bought one, I'd ask for two extras on the spot:)

I just ordered a Honda Fit to be delivered the end of April. All the reviews I saw gave the Fit much higher ratings for sporty driving than the Yaris or other competitors in that segment. I thought it drove nicely in my test drive (test car was an automatic though). Plus the Fit has a much more flexible interior and has a normal dashboard. Downside is dated exterior design and limited availability.

I've rented on one several occasions, unfortunately all rentals here are automatics.
It's a great city car, but I didn't like it on the highway. Not because of it's size, it just seemed to demand constant steering imput.
I have also test driven a manual Honda Fit, and it was alot more fun to drive, and the interior is nicer, but the exteroir is boring, IMHO.

i like the exterior of the yaris...it's cute and euro like. and it has the center dash gauges like my MINI...but i rarely look at the center dash speedo. but you gotta love the simple set up. does it come with manual windows? man i hate electric windows.

the fit is a nice little daily driver too. about time we're getting more choices in smaller cars here in the US. at least we have more to choose from than a civic or a camry now anyway.
