Subject: My New 1602/ engine questions??

Hello everybody,

I am new to the BMW scene, I have wanted an `02 since High School.

After 37 cars i finally got one!!!

Here is is my new aquisition.

An Euro Spec 1974 1602

4 speed
Chamonix White
Dark blue interior
Becker radio

Completely stock except for the Weber carburetor and BBS wheels.

The odometer shows 40K km's (don't know if it is 40K or 140K but looks like it is 40K.

Plan for the car are to keep the car original except for:

Bilstein sport shocks
H&R springs
Hella rear fog light
IE stainless steel exhaust.

Here are the pics

I aw wondering if anybody have modified a 1600 engine to make it more powerful and what are you recommend to do. Are the cams, carburetors etc. will bolt-on directly and how many HP can i get out of this engine.

Thanks

Beautiful car. And, I love the wheels although they stick out quite a bit. Make sure they aren't affecting your camber or caster though.

Like any engine, you could do some internal work, upgrade cam and improve your intake and exhaust system for more HP. I personally would leave the car with the stock 1600 engine, no mods but if you want a little "ooomph" to your car you can do the following for a nice mild upgrade:

1. Intake - get a K&N filter for slightly better air flow
2. Exhaust - get a header or other manifold and maybe an entire free flow exhaust and muffler
3. Carb - 32/36 or even 38/38 will gain you noticeable power. If you want even more "ooomph" buy one with a Re-jet kit which will basically give you a prescription like C.D. Diesel on this site offers (check the FAQs section).
4. Finally, if that isn't enough you can get some free get up and go by swapping out your rear end for a higher numerical (lower gearing) rear end differential. Your take offs will feel much faster but you will lose a wee bit on the high end horsepower (who drives at 90+ mph/kph on average anyway???)

After that, you would have to go big with boring out the block, getting a hotter cam, better ignition (hotter), etc. etc. but try the above to start. I think most people would be very pleased with just doing that.

Also - if you do decide to get a header take note of the exh manifold port diameters which may or may not gain you much depending on what header, etc. you get. In other words, if you buy a header with a diameter of 'O' it won't do much if the exh manifold on your 1600 is 'o' (where 'o' and 'O' are graphical representations of the diameter hole sizes). I know US 1600 sizes but since yours is Euro spec and a 74 it may have the standard 2002 manifold on it...

M.

you can keep the original engine and stuff a 2.0 liter motor which are in abundance. you can modify your 1600 motor with 1600 ti pistons, dual 40mm side draft carbs, a 292 or 300 sport cam, extensive head modifications, headers and you could be in the region of 130hp but you have to spool up your motor on the hi end of the rev range to get it going. or you can go with a 2.0 liter, use ti or tii pistons, 292 cam, dual 40 sude draft carbs some head work, tii exhaust manifolds and you will have 140-150hp reliably and have the torque to push the car faster and cheaper

1600 or 1600ti pistons:

They are no longer made by Mahle, so what you find out there is what you get. Some people confuse the 2 because they both have tall domes.
The 1600 domes are about 6 mm tall while the 1600ti domes are 9mm tall. One route is to have them made by aftermarket manufacturers such as JE or Venolia. These pistons are stronger and lighter than stock since they are forged alloy, however they are installed with looser tolerances since they expand more, and you will experience higher oil and fuel consumption. If you have low miles on your present engine, the chances are that you will only need to re-ring your pistons.
I would stay away from high performance engine modifications. You will gain some power at the expense of fuel consumption. If you are running the 32/36 Weber you are already cutting 4-5mpg off of your mileage. If you have the single barrel Weber 34ICH throw it away since that carburetor is too small and you will be getting much less power than stock That carb is designed for a 1100cc-1300cc engine. The original SOLEX 3640 PDSI works best with the 1600. Good power and mileage.

Sort out the suspension and leave the mechanicals alone if they are in good working order.

Thanks, Slavs. I'm just starting to get a handle on the 1600 stuff. My friend Sam found pistons for my cab, but that was a couple of years ago. time flies. I just got a 67 1600 that I want to redo to stock. It has a 2 liter in it right now. I have a 1600 block and head and thats about it right now, hehe. I want to build this one to park nex to the Corvettes at the local shows.

Very pretty car man,
I had my 1602 motor rebuilt last winter with the following upgrades.
1800ti pistons sourced off ebay, 2L crank, 292 cam, Solex 40 sidedrafts, and some mild porting work. Car is pretty quick and is good on gas provided I don't mash the throttle all the time. Hard to resists though.
