Subject: Classic Motorsports: BMW Builds a "New" 2002.

I didn’t see a thread about this yet, so I guess I’ll post it up. If I’m repeating something someone already posted, sorry for the duplicate.

I was very interested to see the article in the January 2007 issue of Classic Motorsports about BMW building a “new” 2002. In order to show their continued support for older models, BMW took a new chassis that they found in England and built it up with all new parts from the Mobile Tradition catalogue. The build took place in a glassed in shop at BMW HQ. The end result was a brand new 1973 BMW 2002 Tii. 91% of the parts came straight from the Mobile Tradition catalogue.

The author of the article took the car for a test drive. It had about 1500 miles on it when he took it out. He loved it and lamented that BMW hasn’t brought it back.

The "new" Tii toured the US last summer & fall. I saw it at the Monterey Historic races last August and I heard it was also at Lime Rock last September. It's a sweet car.

A number of magazines were invited to drive the car and several articles have popped up about the car (Automobile Jan 2007?).

For all the effort from Mobile Tradition on building a "new" '02, I find it ironic MT hasn't made a bigger effort to reach out to the '02 crowd about their achievement (i.e. a full list of available '02 related parts)

My .02 worth.

I saw it in Monterey too...nice ride. One thing that some of the articles have been leaving out is that the shell was a squarie (a '74 I think), which BMW cut the back off of, and replaced with a roundie section. The articles have also been iconsistent with the sum total cost of the parts used, ranging from around $90,000 to $150,000. One writer went so far as to comment that the gear lever buzzed annoyingly and that the cabin noise was too loud...though most wrote flattering reviews.

The newest issue of Roundel has Mike Self's article about the MT inka tii. He drove it when he went to Lime Rock. I am biased, but his write-up is the definitive one. He bought a brand new 02 in '69 & has kept it running strong to this day, therefore he has quite a perspective on new 02's and well-used ones. Great stunt pulled off by the BMW guys. I don't expect Ford to build us a mid-60's Mustang, do you?? Or a 60's VW Beetle??

I don't think adding a reply & posting a pic requires an apology... At least I hope not, because then I'm really behind!

Yours is very nice indeed! I'd love to have a pic of both of our cars together!

I've had mine for 25 years now!

the swept area that the driver's side wiper clears--rather it be positioned a little high than leave an uncleared spot in the middle of the windshield!

That's the way my '69 was delivered; when I repositioned it, I discovered the above and returned it to its original position. Even more pronounced with the 13 inch blades on the early cars...

As the starter of this thread, I definitely don't consider it a jacking. You'll have to work harder than that to piss me off. ;)

Here is a pic of my '74 2002 (#4225509) taken in early 1975. Note the wiper position of the 15" blades.

I have earlier pics taken at the dealer on the day of delivery. Same position.

Mike S is correct about the 13" blades early '67-'69 cars. In fact, I sold a pair of NOS Bosch blades to Mike a couple of years ago.

Cheers!
