as everyone's aware, many folks here are unable to maintain even slight self control...most large forums have the feature that allows it's member to block or ban any other member they chose...

i'm certain you admins are familiar with the feature...if a user is added to your block or ban list and posts in a thread you're viewing, that users response/comments are not shown to the member that has them blocked...it's set thru the users profile

many here would like not to see some members posts and don't have the ability of self control to simply scroll past it, as others do....

this feature may eliminate a lot of the bitchin and moaning about a few not liking what a few have to say

please...don't discount this as sarcasm, etc...it's a serious suggestion and a common feature on forums with lot's of activity and member interaction

respectfully
esty

we are kind of testing out new features on the beta forum as time permits (been slacking lately -- need to get the gallery mods going !!!)

The ignore thing could be added but I don't know how it would work exactly. If you ignore someone who starts a thread would you see the replies to the thread and not the original message? Or would the whole thread be set to hide=1 ? What about if an ignored person replies to a thread and others reply to that thread within a larger message. Should we parse each message for quote= tags and hide those too?

It might get pretty screwy fast if you ignored more than a few people.

Would be nearly impossible to hide guest poster handles too (well not impossible, but harder since you'd probably want to use the user_id to set ignore rather than a text comparison on the username field -- which would increase overhead on the server a lot compared to an indexed integer ID type test)

If enough people want this and steve and rob say OK we can try it out on the beta and see if it can be made to work. I kinda think its probably a bit of a pain setup right though :(

z...i only know how v bulletin works...so i'm unsure how it would work here but the feature "hides" the user that's blocked from the user that blocked them....the thread still appears to everyone except those that have a user blocked...if they open a thread, not started buy a blocked user....all responses are displayed with a tag at each blocked viewer response

Or would the whole thread be set to hide=1 ? What about if an ignored person replies to a thread and others reply to that thread within a larger message. Should we parse each message for quote= tags and hide those too?

it's just a personal setting not unlike "display signatures, images, avatars, etc" that are included in member profiles

that would be the choice of the person blocking others....they would miss a lot...but by their own choice...for example...if i am blocked by joe...he would see everything in a thread started by me and all other responses except ones i make

in reality, it's a worthless feature, for example, jim blocks me...but then he can't resist seeing what i said, he has to take the time to go to his profile and "unblock" me to read what i said....but for those with strong convictions about not being interested in what some have to say, it's a way to save them from themselves

i'd guess that only registered uses could be block'd...how would the software identify unknowns

i'd imagine it would be a lot of trouble unless the software you're using has it as a feature...it was only a suggestion to aid those that are constantly gripping about having no interest in what a few others have to say...that don't have enough self control to use their scroll button & not use their left click button

i use firefox and i can do just about all that and more thru the use of a few extensions...
