I started an M20 project about three years ago, and sadly I won't have time to finish it or space to store it. I am moving to Germany this summer and then in August I'm moving to Boston for graduate school. I will try to describe it all in detail.
It is a 1976 BMW 2002. It lived in California for a long time, then it was a daily driver in Missouri for two or three years. I had it for less than a year before I decided to do the M20 swap. It sat in the garage ever since. It is dusty because a garage renovation was done around the car.
The bad:
There is some rust, but nothing horrific. I've tried to get pictures of the external rust. The body has been in a couple of accidents. I can tell the passenger door has been replaced and repainted, and the passenger fender has a dent in it. I have a replacement fender but it is the wrong color. I can also tell that the rear panel has been replaced as well. The driver's door is rusted at the bottom. The driver's side rear wheel arch has a wrinkle from where the car has been hit in the back (see pics). I cut out the radiator support to make room for the M20. The car does not run.
The good:
The car is complete and all of the big pieces for the swap are there. The M20 is in the car, along with the 320i 5-speed transmission mated with the elusive 323i transmission bellhousing. The driveshaft has not been cut. The M20 is from a 1990 325i with ~125k miles (if memory serves me). The head gasket and timing belt were both replaced. The ECU is there. I never got it to start but I think it's because I was missing ground connections to the ECU. I know the ECU is good because I plugged it into my 325i. The car has 4 14" basketweaves with Pirelli tires that are in good shape. I put in an interior from a 1990 Acura Integra. Kind of needs cleaning now, but it's in good shape. It would look less funky with new carpet and dyed door panels.
So, I have to sell this as an entire project. You would need a flatbed because the car isn't in any shape to be towed. You get:
The car
M20B25 engine with harness, ECU, old battery, etc.
320i 5-speed mated to 323i transmission housing
original radiator
volvo radiator that would probably work
2 M10 engines, one supposedly has ~60 someodd K on it
the other has ~125k (original to the car), smokes a lot
plus a ton of other parts and things.
This car is obviously not in perfect shape. However, it is definitely worth saving. It's a fun car for somebody who wants to do an M20 swap but doesn't want to go to the hassle of finding the pieces separately. It would be perfect as an autocross car or something (that was my goal). I just don't have the time to finish. I have tried to represent the car honestly and accurately so that some damn crazy appreciative fool like me will finish the project. (tear comes to my eye)
Ask me questions. I'd like to get $2.5k but maybe I'm dreaming (I'm a poor college student). I am in Rolla, Missouri. Make me an offer.
