Thanks to all of you. Here is the story getting the 2002 back. This 2002 was brought up to Rochester in the early 1980's by the original owner from Arlington, Texas, all paperwork since new. It is Chamonix/blue (factory blue vinyl interior in excellent shape, headliner like new, yada yada yada!! ) It was repainted Chamonix in the middle 1980's by a shop in Macedon, N.Y., "Denny's Coachwork and Motorcar", the guy does phenomenal work and I believe Mike Pinch has his Inka 2002 there now. The Chamonix paint now is still beautiful. The car has a long history of maintenance by a local shop, Eksten Autoworks, these folks are longtime members of the BMWCCA and Rick Hoyt, who's been at Eksten's for over 20 years, has done most of the work on this 2002; rebuilt the engine to 9.5:1/292 cam about 33k ago, did the 5 speed conversion, and swapped the 2002 radiator with the 320i, stock brakes, suspension. There is a very nice 320iS steering wheel on the car and when I bought the car 4 years ago my brother Marty and I put on a new Weber 38/38, new tii exhaust manifold with a new oem exhaust system, new Bosch 002 distributor, new clutch slave cylinder, and a Crane XR-700. The car runs very, very nice.
Well, I've known Rick Hoyt for quite a while and found out about 4 years ago his son Rick jr. has a liver condition, he is 14 now. Our local chapter has put on some benefits for him and somehow, 4 years ago, I thought it would be nice to donate the 2002 to Rick. I got with Larry Eksten and we met at Eksten's on a Sturday morning, fall of 2004. Larry called Rick and told him he had to come to the shop as "something came up". Shortly after Rick arrived, I presented him with the keys and title, he was basically "speechless". I've also been very good friends with another longtime BMWCCA member, Roy Hopkins, whose home away from is Eksten's. Roy is a Kodak engineer and is a driving school instructor at the Watkins Glen driving schools., spends a lot of his off time at Eksten's. He's also done a lot of work for the Ronald McDonald House, does the annual "One Lap of America" and also Targa Newfoundland. I talked to Roy a couple of weeks ago, touch base and so on and told him I had a nice drive in the 2000, took her out for the first drive of the season, mentioned I miss having a 2002 though. Roy recently took in a pretty nice 1972 Agave 2002tii, pretty nice shape, I've seen it at his place, needs a little work that he's going to do and then sell so if anyone wants to get with Roy, he's at:
roy@imrtest.com. Roy then mentioned that Rick just doesn't drive the 2002, hasn't even registered it, has used a set of dealer plates Eksten's has the few times he's driven it. He said I should get with Rick and talk to him about the 2002. He was very taken getting the 2002, loved the gesture, but a bit uncomfortable. So, what I decided is take the 2002 back and sell the 2000, with half of the 2000 sale going to Rick jr.'s future liver treatments. He's doing good, will be starting high school this September but his family still makes trips to a hospital in Cincinnati and Rick is really up for a donation this way. That's the tale of getting the '02 back guys.
Tim.
