It's the oldest car story in the book... I recently purchased a metallic brown 1975 BMW 2002 with plans to make it a daily driver. After sitting in my garage for a few weeks, I’ve decided to go in a different direction… without ever having turned a wrench on the ’02. My loss can be your gain. In looking for a 2002, I found that many of the ones available for less than $5,000 had severe rust and/or body problems. This one’s body is in good shape with very few areas with any rust.
The engine idles smoothly once warm and the 4-speed transmission shifts ok. It could probably use a clutch eventually, but that was not in my immediate plans. The brakes need work (I was planning on putting on front rotors, pads, rear drums and shoes) and require some effort to stop. The differential needs to be replaced (price includes a used differential I just purchased). The suspension works fine, but I was planning on the usual sport shocks, harder springs, sway bars, bushings, etc.
The tan interior is in surprisingly great shape. The headliner has a rip on the sunroom and its vintage 70’s. The very top of the back seat has a rip, but only at the very top of the seat.
The body is straight with only three visible rust spots: 1) a dime-sized spot on the trailing edge of the left rear fender lip, 2) a quarter-sized spot just above the left front jack point (below the lip of the door), and 3) a quarter-sized spot on the front air dam (behind and below the bumper). The paint is not show-quality, but it’s not embarrassing (though I was going to have it painted eventually).
There is no rust on the front or rear shock towers. There is an eraser head-sized rust spot just below the right-hand side of the front windshield. There is an eraser head-sized rust spot just above the left-hand headlight, but it is fully covered by the hood when closed.
My price is $2,500. The car is located in Birmingham, Alabama. Please e-mail me for digital pics. I’m happy to shoot pictures of any area of the car you’d like to see.
