Nice find BTW. Later casing with CR gears is probably super rare.
Let us know when you put it on Ebay. :)

oil in it and the worm or other gear has rust on it, all that box is is a rare paper weight.

it's always had oil in it. but when i took it out to inspect/clean, I noticed it has a tight spot right in the middle of the range of motion which can't be adjusted out. is this normal?

in the worm or roller at that spot. Unfortunately it is quite common and makes the CR box largely useless if you want to drive the car at its (or your) limits. It still has nice "bling" value for a garage queen or street cruiser, but you may curse the hard turning if you're parallel parking.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Some boxes do tend to have a tight spot in the middle and I believe that is why some say to adjust the box with the wheels turned to lock.

I am at my limits of technical knowlege now, I bow to others

I'm with you on that one. When replacing my box, every used one I got my hands on felt really stiff in the middle, but buttery smooth once bolted up to the rack. A bit of play when maxed out to either side is pretty common too. You're probably good to go, and the fact that it can't be adjusted out may mean there is very little wear on the gears... you may be luckier than you think.

Just the other side of the coin, I'm no expert, but that's my take on it.

Subject: This box is a close ratio box that BMW offered as an option

They are quite rare, overpriced and offer little performance improvement, they do increase the size of your forearm muscles if you turn in town much.

The lock to lock distance is somewhat less and offers a cool factor to the owner. All of the cr boxes serial number end in 77 and originally painted a terra cotta color

well, it turns smoothly while installed. it's only apparent when you turn it by hand out of the car. not impossible to turn, just a little tighter in the middle. other than that, it has plenty of adjustment left and is smooth.

Here is what I believe to be the close ratio out of the '74 tii I just bought.

It does not appear the steering box was ever painted red either.
