Subject: '97 E36 M3 Sunroof question...

Hey folks...

I'm doing a little "Uncle Duty" babysitting currently for my brother, so I'm driving his wife's M3 to chauffer the kids around. The "family truckster".

The other day I went to open the sunroof and there was a gastly grinding and whirring noise as if a cable had jumped a pulley, or a gear had gone south or both. The rood didn't open, but it did sag towards the rear about a half inch. So now there's an awful lot of road noise, which kind of makes it sound like an 02 at freeway speeds. ;)

From looking at the headliner and exterior, I don't think there's an 'easy' way to get in there to check the components out, but I just thought I'd ask the board first before heading to the shop. Anything I can do to remedy this situation, maybe at least get it to close back up all the way, or is this something best left to the pros?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

I cant help you, but you might wanna try posting over at bimmerforums.com for a question like this. A lot of people over there have E36 M3's.

Man, if i could drive kids around in an M3, i might consider babysitting..........

but it really has to be removed as a unit (it's referred to as a cassette) in order to make repairs. The headliner, oh-shit handles, a, b, and c pillar trim, sunvisors, all must be removed in order to remove the cassette. Once the cassette is on the workbench repairs are fairly straightforward. I'm leaving out a lot of the steps (like removing the actual sliding roof panel) but having repaired a bunch of these it seems easy to me. Post again if you decide to tackle this yourself and need more info.

skipsfcr:

I had a feeling that would be the answer...

The wrench turning 'Curious George' in me would love to tackle this situation, but since it's not my car...I think I'll draw the line at just keeping the kids in one piece until they get back.

Thanks for the info, now I have a better picture of what's going on in there which will help in understanding the repair estimates...

tedd:

Thanks for the tip on bimmerforums. I've only tried posting M3 questions at Roadfly in the past but that forum 'creeps me out' so I quit going there. I'll try the bimmerforums next time...And you're right: There's only two vehicles here that can haul the kids: a suburban or an M3....hmm...let's all try to guess what Uncle Shad chooses every time!!

thanks again guys...
