Subject: brake failure light

my brake failure light is back on again. the last time this happened about 6 months ago my mechanic just filled my brake reservoir thingamajig and it went away. is this normal for it to consume that much brake fluid in 6 months, i only drive it on the weekends if that. or could it be something else..

cheers
miko

chances are you have leak somewhere in break system, either front calipers rear brake cylinders or Master Brake cylinder. your Mechanic took easy way out and just filled the reservoir. Maybe a good quick fix for now, but your brake system needs some closer examination for your Saftey!!!! My leak turned out to be rear cylinders.

I did almost complete Brake system myself. Its not all that difficult.. and nice to see firm stop from your efforts. Good luck!

my leak came from a bleeder nipple about a week after I bought rebuilt calipers. It must have gotten stripped when I bled the brakes.

I believe the E-brake lever sensor can casue the light to come on. That shouldn't be the problem, if topping off the fluid makes the light go out.

Be careful, and figure out where its coming from immediatly.

the clutch slave into the pedal box and is not detected easily.

Pull the driver's side carpet and take a look into the pedal box for wettness and nastiness, take the opportunity to clean and lube all those linkages in there.

If you have a squarelight, the brake fluid level warning light also operates if the emergency brake is left on. The switch bracket (under the e-brake lever boot) is flimsy; if it gets bent or comes loose, your brake warning light will come on even with the lever all the way down.

If it's a 76 (only) there's a "pressure differential sensor"that senses a differential between pressure in the two brake circuits. If the differential is greater than a given amount, it trips a switch and turns your brake warning light on. The reset button is under a rubber cover in a junction box (where several brake lines come together) near the master cylinder. Press button to reset.

cheers

this is semi-good news b/c mine just came on as well last night. I did brake work about 2-3 months ago and still have firm stopping power, so I'm hoping it is something with the e-brake.
