Subject: Should I replace the bearings when replacing rotors?

I will be ordering some rotors soon and was wondering should I replace the bearings too or is there a way to tell if they are good? Also, do new rotors come with the bolts to attach them to the hubs? If not, where can I get them?

Subject: YOU Should replace the bearings when replacing rotors....

[img]AS PREVENTATIVE maintainence -
unless you know the history of the bearings (30 years ???)
always replace the bearings when you have the rotors and hubs off.
No, the rotor retaining bolts are not included, and are very high tensil
strength hardware. Available from any BMW dealer - DO NOT REUSE OR USE GRADE8 hardware store bolts ! Tighten to the correct torque and use BLUE Loctite 242 on clean threads. Also a good time to replace the caliper hoses if 20 + years old, flush the fluid using a pressure bleeder, and the clutch fluid at the same time. Then flush the fluid every year, or before every track event.
Have fun, work SAFE.

The brake hoses are new.

What kind of grease should be used?

Subject: Packing the new bearing properly is very important

If you do it by hand, the technique to insert the grease into the bearing so you can see it come out the other side, is an art. My son taught me how to handpack bearings. I used a bearing packer by Lisle tools on one of the bearings last week and was satisfied by the result in returned.

Also having the correct bearing, race and seal insertion tool is helpful to insert the races and seals. I got mine bearing and race tool from my son's tool box. If you do not have one, I guess a brass drift will suffice.

You shouldnt need a bearing tool for the front bearings. You just kinda set them in place and then torque the spindle nut. Just make sure you pack them good. But definitely replace the bearings with the rotors.

Subject: You are right about the bearings but setting the races

are easier if you use the right tool. Usually the races are done at the same time bearings are done.

The bearing just drop in in a tapered fitting.
