Subject: WTF? So the guy made a boo-boo...

I've made one or two myself, fortunately in pre-internet days.

it's just a good example of what not to do.

plus, a sock stuck in an engine is fairly funny. i'm envisioning him driving around with one bare foot.

Many, many years ago, we were doin' a valve job on a Ford 350 V8.
My cousin handed me the intake manifold to bolt back on.
The engine would not run.
We pulled the motor apart to see what could've happened.
When I pulled the heads...socks/rags had been sucked down and were wrapped around the valves, hanging into the cylinders.

My cousin had stuffed socks/rags into the intake manifold ports & forgot to remove them before he handed it to me.
We got the socks out...put it back together and it ran fine.

This was at least 25 years ago, and to this day, I still emphasize the fact that it was NOT MY FAULT!!!

Subject: just for the record.....

fibers like that *CAN* embed themselves in the (VERY) soft main/rod/cam bearing surfaces, causing the metal around the embedded fiber to raise slightly, which is bad. depending on how bad the sock was shredded, i might either be very or not at all concerned about it. E46 M3s have had a recall on the main bearings (up to 02 model year i think) so many of the dealer techs can swap out at least the main bearings in a couple or few hours. (The techs in the bay next to ours at the dealership used to do them so fast it seemed like they were done in about 45minutes!!) BEST advice i could give any new BMW owner is get to know your dealership techs!! why? because many of them take work on the side ... ;)

p.s. i was going to post this at the e46 site but didnt want to bother with registering...
