Subject: 1992 325i buy?

I am thinking of buying a 1992 325i but the timing belt broke. I cannot look at the car as it is some distance away, but am not sure the chances of the valves being bent? The buyes says just needs the chain, but does anyone know if this is an interface valve system? My mechanic said anything with an interface system to stay away from if the chain or belt goes. Any help would be great!

If memory serves, these aren't freewheeling motors, and if the belt breaks is generally catastrophic. Call your local dealer service dept to verify. They'll be able to tell you instantly.

it is an interference motor and it is drfivin by chain not belt. somethign major had to happen for the chain to snap.. those go for 300k miles without too many issues. Though i believe it is a 150k mile service item. Stay away.

Those cars are great over all and can be had cheap in decent condition.

with timing chain dual overhead cams. It is interference motor and pulling that head is a job. It is probably easier to swap engines!

You havent said wether its an M20 or an M50. Its actually a common problem as the belt needs to be changed every 60K///////

hey radar
I don't know and it is not mentioned in the description. how can I tell? And the timing chain fails that often? What would cause it to fail that often?

Belt technology had not caught up with engine design If its an M20 its a relativley easy fix. You will need a good head sells for 3-4 hundred on ebay. If you live by a pick and pull might cost you $50. If its an M50 its a TOHC rather than a single and gets very expensive to fix,,,,,
