Registration sucks, but public IP info (like the old site) helps us self-police

continue to allow totally anonymous "guest" posters. I have my own arguments for the various options, but what are yours?

I definitely like the ability to post as a guest -- when we were discussing/piloting the upgrade, several people mentioned how much they hated the registration requirements, and I'm inclined to agree.

First, If you just stumble on the FAQ looking for a random answer, it's a pain to have to register, and you're more likely to stick around if it's a quick and painless process to fire off a post.

Second, it is probably very easy to add the ability to see IP addresses -- moderators and admins already have that ability. It's not a simple flip of a switch, but I can make the mod if we require it.

and no IP for registered submissions. Maybe that would be a good comprimise?

Why do you all continue to insist on pleasing 100% of the people who visit these forums? I don't get it.

As for displaying the IP address...

- Stop "guest posting". Allows for spam and other bad things.
- Only allow Registered members to post. easier to "ban" someone.
- Only Site admin/moderators/owners can see IP addresses. Sometimes things get heated and people get too dam.n emotional over a silly little board. It's electrons people!

Finally, for the love of all that is sacred and good in the world, STOP TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE. PHPBB is a solid set up and the message board standard. The Internet is NOT just these forums and Roadfly (antique set up). If people can't get over the fact the boards now "have the Pertronics ignition", tough.

I want to know how many of the complainers have complete, original, unmodified cars.

hey buddy!! lighten up, its just electrons!!! =p

We are trying to make this *YOUR* (not really you/r specifically, you know what i mean...) board/website, as we always have. 100% is not the goal. i dont know where you got that idea.

Its a COMMUNITY site, so we try to make it as easy to use for its users as possible. Something wrong with that? What are you, a Kalifornia Kommie?? =p AHAHAHA! =p

Anyways, points taken, under advisement, filed away, etc. Thanks for the input. :)

that sounds like a good idea actually. i like the idea of reserving certain "privledges" as it were for regiusers, while still making it as easy as possible for guests to stop in for a quick question. anyways, we'll see how it all turns out. :)

That's a perfect solution. The whole point of using the IP is to tell if someone says who their name is (or tell if multiple posters are the same). If someone logs in, neither of those is an issue, so I like that solution a lot.

(BTW, Mike: the threaded view looks really good, I'm impressed.)

I'm pretty sure we won't hit 100% :P

... but I like to think that what sets this board apart from the other options out there is that we genuinely care about the people that use it. As soon as people stop coming around because they don't like the board (find it too cumbersome, etc.), we're dead. With sites like this, the community *is* the board -- we're just trying not to forget that.

I live in Kalifornia, yes. This state has too many hippies. I hate hippies. Thus my poke at the state's name. I'm not a resident of this state. ;)
