Subject: Praise and more suggestions . . .

First, you won't find many sites where the designer/developer listens to what the users say, so many thanks for that. Your redesigned page from another post is fine with me the way it looks, but . . .

I do think that the default order of posts should be newest first, whether flat or threaded view. You can get a quantity on one page in flat view, and change to threaded to have the look of the old site too, provided both flat and threaded have the newest post first. Also, it would be nice to stay in flat and have a threaded view too for just one post if you click on that one post, without going into the thread, just to see the subject lines on the replies to one post. You've changed the flat view since Friday so that any post replied to since is boosted to the top, just like the threaded view was from the start. When you go newest to oldest the user knows that the further down the list they go, whether on one page or over multiple pages, that they are going further back in time. Also, as new users come to the site and they go over old questions, the way it is now you'll get their questions related to long dead threads at the top all the time. I like to check-in several times a day and when the latest are at the top you can easily find where you left off the last time.

What's with the file info (name, size, views) on some of the photos posted in people's posts, including your example from another thread of your revised page? Regarding signatures and the ridiculous ones like Blunt has posted in the avatars off-topic thread, I think that with the avatars the signatures aren't needed. BMW1602.com is really using it as an ad and is more prominent than anything on your site promoting yourself. I think you should charge him, or anything similar posted, an advertising fee.

I'm on my XP/ie601 setup at the moment, but my wfw311/ie302 is still my normal setup, and the way the site is at the moment, I'm not going to be participating much (as if anyone cares anyway) as I don't have the time to spend 20 minutes every time I come to see what's new. I'm well versed in computers and online (heck, I've had the same text-based email for twenty years, which is one reason I don't use later gear as I don't even need the net to get my email, just a dumb terminal) and I do expect to be left in the dust as time goes by with some sites, but that's by choice. One of the good things about the old site was that it was excellent for info being mainly text-based in it's layout. With photos being harder to post then, there weren't many wasted pics posted as there are now. What's worse about that is that most don't use the proper programs to keep the file-size of the pics reasonable (using Photoshop's Save-For-Web for example), and you have these giant files to download, and now there are a heck of a lot more of 'em. In Harv's Hot-off-the-press thread on the general board he posts the exact same shot 13 times in one thread. There's no need to post the same shot 13 times with every reply he makes adding another one. Isn't posting it once at the top of the thread enough for people to see?

Anyway, just some comments, not complaints.

Jay

I agree with F1 , and this is a great new version.

Some of us are just analog folks
living in a digital world. We'll all adjust.
