When I first start the car in the morning, I here a squeaking sound that seems to be coming from the alternator, possibly at the belt or pulley. Is there a place in there that I can lube easily or could it be a slipping belt? Once the car has warmed up a few minutes it goes away.

BMWs use a funny angle in the V of the pulley, a belt from a different car will slip as not much of the belt actually makes contact with the sides of the V. _________________ Tom

Your belt is worn, and/or loose. It may need to be tightened, but if you make it too tight, you will damage the water pump.

The belt is really quite new, only about 10k miles so I doubt it is worn. Adjustment sounds more likely. Can anyone describe how it's done and what how to measure the correct tension?
