Subject: Mr. Dubois....please clarify

in a recent post of yours regarding VIN's you added this comment..

"This brings another subject: I think a great majority of 2002 75 and under are probably smog illegal in California, and there will a dreaded day when a cop will be handling fix it tickets to some of us."

I want to understand what your comment means. Has there been a CARB change?

Thanks
Chris

all it means is that you do not have to take your car to the smog test station. You are still supposed to have all smog equipment in takt on the car.

Lucky for us, most CHP and cops in general are car guys, so they understand, but they know they are holding the carrot, so don't piss them off...

test with a pre-'76 mobile. All smog gear has to be in place and functioning as normal and within the correct limits regardless.

Subject: good. I don't mind clean air, but its already hard enough ..

to get to the DMV -- 1 hour drive each way, get a number, wait in line at least an hour.. rural communities are already in hell already trying to deal with them. I can't imagine what a pain in the ass it would be to get smog tested and so on.

I wonder if farm plates are excluded .. might have to put some of those on the bimmer!

In the Portland area there have been infra-red emissions testers installed at a few freeway on ramps for a couple of years now. The word I personally got from a DEQ shop relations person was that when it sensed a car whose emissions passed, a photo of the plate was taken and a notice sent to the owner saying they didn't need to go to a DEQ test station before receiving their tags. I asked how long before poluters would be flagged and notified? He just smiled and said he couldn't talk about that side of the coin. Big brother is watching more than you know.

Subject: Hah! for once Ohio is going the other way!!! SW Ohio counties

previously under emission inspections (Dayton and Cincinnati) for cars less than 25 year old will no longer have that requirement as of 1 Jan. Of course people who renew their plates in Dec will still have to pay $19.50 for emissions inspection that will won't be necessary in 30 days, but...good riddance to what amounted to an extra $19.50 license plate fee every other year.
