Subject: more M20 swap ?'s...

Everything I have seen/read concering this swap calls for the use of an
E21 5 sp. Why is that? Is there any reason why the 5 sp from an E30
(say...my parts car...) won't work?

You might not have to cut into the tranny tunnel if you use an e21 5-speed. I have an e30 5 speed (Getrag 260) and its a huge beast.

has it on the rear diff... for starters....

I'm sure there are other things possibly size but the E21 is the best fit because they are similar vintage.

with the e21 trans, you just have to bang out the tunnel. With the e30 trans, you have to cut the tunnel out, fab up a new one, and weld it in. Its fairly obvious from looking inside as well, as there will be a big hump now. Obviously a stock center console wouldn't work anymore either, so then you have to build a new one of those, or go without.

Matt McGinn posted some pics a while back of a tunnel built to house a e30 trans. I may have some pics of Marc Paris' car, who used a e30 trans, I'll see if I can find them.

I saw a long time ago where A guy actually took an E30 tranny and had one installed $$$. Why cant we come up with a system with a hall effect sensor on a halfshaft and Have an electronic box that runs the mechanical gauge? you'd think it would have been done by now?

This is a welded-in unit in a car built to take the e30 box:

Of course the firewall was clearanced a ton-the heater was eliminated, etc etc. Not needed to fit the m20 of course, but it makes installing the engine with the transmission like throwing a hotdog down a hallway, so to speak.

Here is another that is removable, but was not built to take the e30 unit-but probably could anyway, we just havent tried it as this project got sidelined for a while:

You guys are really really helpful. I really appreciate it! But
beware...the more helpful you are the more questions I'm gonna ask,
because this project is just getting under way. It'll be this summer
until I actually pull the 2002 motor. For now I'm just sorta
accumulating parts and information.

Subject: There IS one other option that will let you keep the manual speedo

drive - some significant tunnel work will be necessary, but the end result is a pretty much bulletproof transmission. What's required is a bellhousing that was only used on the 1982 525e - it mates the Getrag 260 series transmission that was originally used behind the M30 big six with the M20 block.

Depending on what the transmission was originally installed in, it will either have a speed drive installed, or be machined for drive components, but have a plug filling the drive hole - either way, it's pretty easy to set up for a speedo cable, and the 260 gearbox is supposed to be good to about 350 lbs feet of torque (I remember reading someplace that they're frequently used in South African built Cobra replicas).

Late E12's and early e24's had the 265 or optional C/R 262 dogleg tranny, both with the cable drive spedo.
