Subject: Another Maaco/Sheib/Miracle question. How about changing colors

For those who have experience with these "cheap" paint
shops, how good of a job do they do if you want to do
something other than the original color? Do they generally
do door jams, inside the hood where the strut towers are,
etc?

in general though, it keeps coming back to prep. if you think youre going to roll your shell in there and have them change colors and do the prep youre going to end up with a piece of shit. if youre willing to dismantle and prep the engine bay, jams, under hood and trunk etc, you may end up with a decent job for a nice driver. no concours job is ever coming out of maaco or scheib but im sure you could make a respectable driver if you put in the hours

and....they'd spray on top of the current paint, not strip it, which adds a lot of mil to the metal, which is easily cracked and very hard to repair

Miracle in Dublin, CA. The key is to remove all the trim you can as well as seals that they otherwise "mask" off with tape. I stripped all the trim and rubber off the car and left the windows intact. Kinda tricky on an '02 with the rear sid glass but, can be done. Heck I'd probably remove the side rear glass altogether. Keep in mind all they do is paint so, the painter gets alot of practice. I gave them a couple extra hundred bucks to spray a couple more coats of clear so I could wetsand the orange peel myself. The paint still shines pretty nice. Not as nice as my Camaro or M5 but, its also a quarter of the cost and looks as better than the original paint.

I would suggest to have them spray a couple of extra clear coats. This way you can do some wet sanding. Also remember that their paint job is not what is bad it is their prep work. So don't rely upon them for prep work. Do it yourself.
good luck
