Acording to the Bavarian Autosport catalog, there are three syles:

1969-1972 002 distributor
1973,74 and tii ID48X distributor reverse style
1975,76 320i thru 1979 008 distributor

The Carfax system is relatively new. I don't know if you will learn much from a 1970's car. Maybe only the last few years of ownership history.

I had 3 of these cars back when they were new (about the 1975-78 time frame). I had a 1968, 69 and a 70. All had light gray air cleaner housings.

I think the seatbelt interlock system was a 1974 government mandate. It would not be present in a 1972 car. Might be the seatbelt warning light though.
